Peel Premiership Forward Targets More September SuccessTuesday, April 15, 2025 - 12:16 PM

Reigning premiers Peel Thunder have faith in their ability to be contenders this year despite a winless start to the Sullivan Logistics WAFL season.

Held to a draw by Claremont in round 1, the Thunder suffered a 49 point defeat to South Fremantle last weekend.

Peel forward Corey Tregenza believes the squad has the appetite for more success in 2025.

“It would obviously be easy to just ride the highs of last year but I think the whole group is on the same page and the drive is still there,” Tregenza said.

“Since the start of this season, we have all been very positive about what we can achieve, and that flows between all groups at the club.

“We have really made an emphasis on building the club as a whole and trying to make sure we succeed in every area.

“The premiership was an amazing feeling and we are feeding off of that energy going forward.”

A local product, Tregenza understands Peel have gone from the hunter to the hunted.

“To be fortunate enough to be a part of the squad that played was an insane experience, but many players missed out and the hunger will be amplified,” he said.

“I don't think any team goes into a season not wanting to win it all, but we have acknowledged there is a target on our back for multiple reasons which is an exciting challenge.

“Everyone in the group has embraced that, so it is very important we go in prepared for what we know we are going to face week in week out.

“Ultimately, the goal is to do it again.”

Tregenza has kicked three goals through the opening two matches, coming off a 25 goal haul goal haul in 2024.

He proved his commitment to the club by re-signing with the Thunder for the next two seasons.

“Honestly, it was pretty straightforward,” Tregenza said.

“I love the club, I love the people here, and I feel like we’re building something really special.

“The premiership last year also helps a fair bit.

“The support from the coaches, teammates, and the wider club made it a pretty easy choice.

“I feel at home when I come to the club and it's definitely the place I want to be.”

Last week’s retirement of premiership hero Blair Bell leaves a void in the playing group, but Tregenza points to the opportunities for others.

“The squad we have at Peel is so important to the overall success at the club, especially the guys that have come back from last year,” he said.

“We still have a great deal of experience that is vital for the development of the younger guys, and a lot of people have stepped up with leadership which is great to see.

“The club depends on local talent to thrive and we are well served in that area again.”

Corey’s dad Rod Tregenza was a star in the WAFL, playing a combined 50 games with Peel and East Fremantle.

The two time Bernie Naylor Medallist and 1999 Simpson Medallist remains an important sounding board.

“It’s something I probably appreciate more the further my career progresses,” he said.

“He’s never really forced his talent onto me, which I’ve always respected.

“But when I do go to him for advice, whether it’s footy or just life stuff, he’s got a great way of helping me see things clearly.

“Having someone like that in your corner, who’s been through the highs and lows of the game, it’s definitely a bit of an advantage that I have.

Peel Thunder hosts East Fremantle at Lane Group Stadium on Easter Saturday at 1.10pm.
