New AAMI WA Football State 16s Girls coach Kate Orme was proud of her team’s “never say die” attitude after finishing the AFLW National Under-16s Championship with a stunning comeback win over Brisbane Lions Academy in Melbourne.
WA finished the carnival with a 1-1 record, falling just short of a come-from-behind victory over South Australia in Adelaide in their opener before a four-goals-to-none final term against the Lions resulted in a spirited 11-point win.
“Our coaching group was thrilled with the determination of our players,” Orme reflected.
“After our clash with SA, it was clear this team has a ‘never say die’ attitude.
“We were impressed with their resolve in game two but not surprised.

“It was wonderful for the players to share the joy of a National Champs win together and with so much support from family across our interstate games, it was made even sweeter.”
Orme was particularly impressed with the team’s hunger, work ethic and footy IQ which stood out throughout the campaign.
“The group has been so hungry to work hard,” she said.
“Their strong footy IQ meant we were able to on-board them with several technical elements of the game throughout the program.
“Our players played multiple roles and often new positions and we were impressed by their openness to learn and contribute to the team’s goals.”
West Perth young gun Arybella Nelson, who made her ATCO WAFLW debut earlier this season at just 15 years of age, was named WA’s MVP after a strong carnival down back where she averaged 26 disposals including 29 in the final match.
Fellow leader and West Perth product Vienna Matera and Subiaco’s Caitlin Boss were also among the standouts for the Black Swans.
“We had strong drive from our leaders, Bella Nelson and Vienna Matera across the program,” Orme said.
“Caitlin Boss was outstanding throughout the Champs, giving us drive and grit through the midfield.
“However, it is difficult to understate the impact Bella Nelson had on both games, with her skills, toughness and decision-making.”
