CTF Tradie of the Month: South Freo young gun Roan O’Hehir

South Fremantle premiership young gun Roan O’Hehir is in his fourth season playing league footy in the WAFL.

The 22-year-old, who has been nominated as the Construction Training Fund’s Tradie of the Month for July, is also in his fourth year working as a full-time civil construction tradie.

O’Hehir, who works for Prime Civil, got into the civil construction industry through his dad and recalled being as young as 14 when he got his first taste of it.

“I got into the industry as it’s what my dad does,” O’Hehir said.

“I used to go and work with him on school holidays since I was 14, driving machinery and laying sewer mains, water mains and drainage.

“This is my fourth year working full-time in the trades.”

Juggling semi-professional football with full-time work as a tradie has its challenges.

O’Hehir has some advice for those looking to follow in his footsteps, highlighting the importance of sleep and fuelling up.

“I have found good routines now to get the balance right,” O’Hehir said.

“It can be hard at times but the best way to manage it all is being prepared with enough lunch to get you through the day and drink plenty of water to ensure you have enough energy for training.

“Sleep is also an important one for me, making sure I’m getting early nights as I’m up around 5am and some nights wouldn’t get home until 8.30pm after training.

“That is probably a good one for people who want to work in the trades and also play WAFL footy.”

O’Hehir recently returned from a calf injury for the Bulldogs and is nearing his 50-game milestone in the seniors.

He played an integral role in South Fremantle’s premiership last season, playing 17 games including their thrilling Grand Final victory over East Perth at Optus Stadium where he collected 14 disposals and kicked a goal.
