Football brings West Kimberley women together

To say female football in the West Kimberley is booming is an understatement.

It was last year the West Kimberley Football League (WKFL), in partnership with the West Australian Football Commission (WAFC) and West Australian Country Football League (WACFL), expanded to create its own women’s competition.

This was due to the rise of AFL Women’s and the fact that many young females in the region had the dream of one day becoming a national football star.

The Looma Eagles and Cable Beach were the stars of the inaugural Women’s West Kimberley Football League Grand Final. The Eagles won in a nail biting match, taking out the first ever women’s premiership for the region.

In another major achievement for the region, the WKFL has recently partnered with Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services to promote the benefits of team sport, and encourage women to make healthy lifestyle choices.

This partnership was named Her Rules Her Game.

Even though it is early in the season, the positive health outcomes are already apparent. Women are sharing the journey to a healthier life through improved fitness, quitting smoking and the social benefits of belonging to a team.

KAMS staff and member services are present at every game day and each round has a different health theme such as healthy ears, renal health awareness and tackling Indigenous smoking.

Central Kimberley Football League participant numbers have also spiked this year, pushing the total number of female football participants in the region to more than 400.
