Over the last 8 weeks Wembley Primary School, in conjunction with Wembley JFC, has been running a Junior Girls Football Program on its school oval.

A total of 45 girls ranging from years 4 to 7 took part in the program which consisted of skill work, modified games and two competitive games against Warwick Greenwood JFC.

Warwick Greenwood played host to Wembley in the first game, with Wembley returning the favour the following week.

Claremont District Development Officer Sam Cousens said both committees should be commended for the work they did to ensure the games were well run and memorable.

“You couldn’t wipe the smiles of the girls faces when they got their opportunity to pass the ball to a team mate, take a mark or kick a great goal for their team,” Cousens said.

“Although the game was played in great spirit the girls were certainly competing and “having a crack! So for those picturing a non contact friendly game, think again!

“Two games had to be played at the same time – Yr 4/5’s & Yr 6/7’s, due to the amount of girls who participated in this program.

“Special mention must go to John Porteous (Wembley PS), Allison Farley (Wembley JFC), Belinda Smith (Claremont Female Football Development Officer) and the whole committee at the Wembley JFC.

“We look forward to expanding this program in the future and are excited of the prospect of other clubs getting involved,” Cousens said.
