New record for The Sunday Times WA Football Volunteer of the Year

MORE than 3000 of WA’s football volunteers have been nominated for The Sunday Times WA Football Volunteer of the Year Award, setting a new nomination record for the prestigious honour.

The award has grown significantly since 2007 with 74 nominations, reaching just over 1400 nominations in 2012 and then doubling again in the last two years to exceed 3000.

A finalist will now be selected in each of WA’s 17 Football Districts and Regions and the winners invited to the 2014 Sandover Medal count.

The overall State winner of The Sunday Times WA Football Volunteer of the Year Award will be announced on the night and receive a trip for two to the 2014 AFL Grand Final, including flights, accommodation and tickets to the Grand Final breakfast function.

Last year, East Perth District volunteer Luke McNiece, pictured with John Worsfold, was named the overall winner from 2114 nominees for his tireless dedication as president, vice president and committee member at the Coolbinia Bombers Junior Football Club.

West Australian Football Commission Club Development Manager Glenn Morley said he was thrilled with the 3010 nominations received for this year’s award and thought it was fantastic one of the game’s most valuable assets would be recognized.

“Volunteers play a crucial role at all levels of football so it’s important they receive recognition,” he said.

“There are so many aspects of our game that just wouldn’t happen without the dedication and commitment of our volunteers. They are involved at all levels, whether it’s in the canteen, umpiring, coaching or driving their kids to the game.

“Just like there are star players and star coaches, we want to recognise star volunteers and it is thanks to The Sunday Times that we can do this.”
