Nominations opened today for The Sunday Times WA Football Volunteer of the Year Award to coincide with the start of National Volunteer Week (May 12-18).

The overall winner of The Sunday Times WA Football Volunteer of the Year Award will be announced at the 2014 Sandover Medal count and receive a trip for two to the 2014 AFL Grand Final, including flights, accommodation and tickets to the Grand Final breakfast function.

Last year, East Perth District volunteer Luke McNiece, pictured, won for the award after being nominated by the Coolbinia Bombers Junior Football Club for his tireless dedication as a club president, vice president and committee member.

WA Football Commission Club Development and Coaching Manager Glenn Morley congratulated Mr McNiece on winning the award and encouraged more people to nominate a volunteer in 2014.

“There was a record 2114 nominations from around WA last year and we are aiming to top that this year,” he said.

“There are so many aspects of our game that just wouldn’t happen without the dedication and commitment of our volunteers and it’s really important that they are recognised.

“Volunteers are involved at all levels whether it’s in the canteen, umpiring, coaching or driving their kids to the game. Just like there are star players and star coaches, we want to recognise star volunteers and it is thanks to The Sunday Times that we can do this,” Mr Morley said.
