Testing Times for WA Football Teenage Talent

Running, jumping, turning, and twisting were all critical elements at the WAFC’s Pathway Combine Testing Day at the Gold Netball Centre in Jolimont.

For many, it’s the start of their 2022 journey which could land them a place on an AFL list.

State Talent Manager Adam Jones was impressed by the standard.

“We had between 270 and 300 athletes come through from our WA Talent Pathway.

There were 30 players per club and the Southwest had a representative group come through,” Jones said.

Athleticism is a key focus in modern football.

“We had some really good times, some great 20 metre sprints, plenty of excellent vertical jumps, so it was a great day.”

East Perth’s Reuben Ginbey and Claremont’s Mitch Barron caught the eye of Jones.

“Reuben is part of the State 18’s Academy and he tested 2.85 seconds for the 20-metre sprint, which is up there towards the elite end.

Another one of our Academy members Mitch Barron tested at 7.8 seconds for the agility which is up around the elite times as well,” Jones revealed.

State Academy pair Darcy Jones and Riley Hardeman from Swan Districts also displayed outstanding athleticism.

Both produced excellent results, jumping over the scales in the vertical jump, with Darcy producing 84 and Riley 79.

Eagle-eyed talent scouts took the opportunity to assess potential draftees.

“There were a number of recruiters who came down to watch the testing, so they’re starting to get a feel for what the group is like this year.”

The next Combine Testing Day will be held in October, the final chance for aspiring players to impress clubs before NAB AFL Draft Day.
