In a significant development for WA’s football talent, the state’s Pre-season Training Squads have been announced, showcasing some of the most promising male and female players.
70 young athletes, aged between 17 and 19, have been selected to participate in an extended three-month program that kicks off at the end of November and runs through February.
West Australian Football Commission Executive Manager – Football Operations, Scott Baker said this is an exciting time for the players selected in the two squads and he highlighted the program’s extended duration, as a crucial aspect.
“The longer timeline will enable more extensive training and place a strong emphasis on player development and education, all geared towards preparing these players for the 2024 WAFL season and National Championships,” Baker said.
Baker explained the motivation behind this extended training, citing the substantial resources being invested in AFL academies in New South Wales, Queensland, and Victoria.
“We need to keep pace with these states and expedite the development of the most talented young players in Western Australia; it’s imperative we enhance their training programs,” he said.
“The belief is that having the best young athletes training together for an extended period, under the guidance of full-time coaches, will significantly elevate the standards and the development of these young players.”
This approach is seen as the key to leveling the playing field with other states during National Championships and increasing the likelihood of producing players for senior football, both at the WAFL and AFL levels.
This high-performance program is geared to optimise players’ development, both on and off the field. It will provide more individualised and one-on-one coaching and support, giving players the best opportunity to develop as players and people.
The squads will train three times a week with the first session to take place on November 27 at Tuart Hill.
