WAFL Life Member 2026 – Graham Melrose

Graham Melrose is a deserving recipient of WAFL Life Membership after an exceptional contribution as an elite player, premiership captain, representative footballer and senior coach across many decades.

Melrose enjoyed a decorated senior WAFL career beginning in 1967 and ending in 1982, playing 218 WAFL games, primarily as a skilful rover.

Starting at the East Fremantle Football Club (144 games), Melrose enjoyed individual and team success before moving to North Melbourne in the VFL, playing 111 VFL games between 1975-1979.

He was unlucky to miss North Melbourne’s premierships during that period because of injuries.

In 1980, Melrose returned to WA where he played at the Swan Districts Football Club (74 games).

He also represented Western Australia on nine occasions to cap off a remarkable football journey.

Melrose is one of the few players in WAFL history to captain two clubs to premierships, leading East Fremantle to the 1974 Grand Final glory and Swan Districts to the 1982 flag, the latter the club’s first in 20 years.

His individual excellence was recognised with two Lynn Medals at East Fremantle (1972 & 1974), the Sandover Medal in 1974 and the Simpson Medal in the 1982 Grand Final.

Melrose’s contribution to the WAFL extended beyond his playing career into coaching and development.

At East Fremantle, he served as Colts and Reserves Coach before being appointed League Coach (1987–1989), leading the club to multiple finals campaigns.

Melrose later served as League Coach at Swan Districts (1995–1996).

His broader contribution to football in Western Australia is reflected through his leadership across two WAFL clubs, and his influence on generations of players through coaching and mentorship.

Melrose has also been recognised with a series of elite honours, including induction into the West Australian Football Hall of Fame (2007), induction into the East Fremantle Football Club Hall of Fame, and the rare distinction of being named in the Team of the Century at both East Fremantle and Swan Districts.

Across more than three decades, Melrose has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the WAFL through elite performance, leadership, and coaching service at two clubs.

His record reflects not only excellence, but a sustained and influential contribution to the development and success of WA football.
