South Fremantle premiership player and former AAMI WA Football State 18s MVP Jaxon Artemis was the first player picked up tonight’s AFL Mid-Season Draft, heading to Essendon with pick one.

Artemis, a smooth-moving rebounding defender, moved from the Bulldogs to Tasmania’s VFL program during the off-season after narrowly missing out in previous drafts.

The 19-year-old came through the grades at South Fremantle, playing CTF WAFL Futures and EGT WAFL Colts before breaking into the league side where he featured 17 times including last season’s thrilling Grand Final victory over East Perth at Optus Stadium.

He averaged 13 disposals and three marks at senior level after making his debut in the opening round of the 2025 season against Perth, playing a mix of half-back and wing.

Essendon’s National Recruiting Manager Rob Forster-Knight was excited about bringing in a player of his quality.

“We’re stoked to be able to acquire Jaxon tonight.” Forster-Knight said.

“He has shown great resilience and fortitude after not being taken in two national drafts, which is a testament to his character and internal belief.”

“We are sure he will come into the club and make an impact; he has been a strong performer down at Tassie (VFL).”
