Round 6 – Claremont v Subiaco Match ReportMonday, April 24, 2017 - 9:03 AM - by Chris Pike

CLAREMONT has been well and truly overrun for the second straight week with Subiaco booting eight goals to nil in the final quarter to cruise to a 55-point victory at East Fremantle Oval on Saturday.

The game was held at East Fremantle Oval with Claremont Oval's redevelopment still yet to be completed.

It was a tight contest for three quarters and Claremont even led by 19 points at quarter-time.

But Subiaco dominated the last quarter with the only eight goals to secure the 15.10 (100) to 6.9 (45) victory.

The disappointing last quarter for Claremont comes after they also conceded seven goals from 18 minutes into the last quarter onwards on Good Friday against South Fremantle to lose by 65 points.

The losses to South Fremantle and Subiaco come on the back of Claremont winning its first three games of 2017 against East Perth, Perth and East Perth.

Subiaco, meanwhile, is now building some ominous form having won five consecutive matches since an opening round loss to South Fremantle.

Dynamic Subiaco forward Liam Ryan had another outstanding performance kicking five goals from 16 possessions and five marks.

Ben Sokol also continued his impressive form up forward for the Lions kicking another three goals from seven kicks and four marks.

Debutant Liam Baker, who crossed from West Perth over summer, was impressive with 18 disposals, five tackles and two goals.

Chris Phelan continued to dominate in the midfield for Subiaco racking up another 34 possessions to go with 11 inside-50 entries, 10 tackles, five marks and a goal.

Captain Kyal Horsley also had 26 possessions for the Lions, Wayde Twomey 22, Craig Hoskins 21, Bailey Matera 20, Leigh Kitchin 19 and Max Walters 19.

In the absence of Damon Guiness and Lachlan Delahunty, and with David Madut in the reserves, Clancy Wheeler spend most of the game in the ruck for Subiaco and finished with 22 disposals, four marks, 14 hit outs and a goal.

Claremont's Mitch Andrews did dominate the hit out department racking up 60 for the game to go with 11 possessions.

Ian Richardson and Jack Bradshaw kicked two goals apiece for the Tigers.

Youngster Bailey Banfield continued his impressive form for Claremont in the midfield with 27 possessions while Ryan Lim gathered 22 disposals, Jye Bolton 21, Ryan Murphy 21, Tom Ledger 21, Bradshaw 20 and captain Jake Murphy 18.

Claremont started strongly coming off its first loss of the season with the first two goals of the game courtesy of Banfield and Bradshaw.

Subiaco got on the board and answered through debutant Baker but the Tigers continued to have the better of the start with a reply to Beau Maister.

Claremont got a fourth opening quarter goal shortly before the siren to Ian Richardson and took a commanding 19-point advantage into quarter-time.

However, Subiaco picked up the aid of the breeze in the second term and worked right back into the contest with goals to Ryan, Sokol and Walters leave the scores all level at the main break.

Subiaco kicked three goals to two in the third quarter to take a six-point lead into three quarter-time, but the game was still very much up for grabs at the final change.

It was all the Lions in the last quarter, though, as they piled on eight goals to nil to romp to the emphatic 55-point victory.

Claremont will take on Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval next Saturday while Subiaco has its first bye of 2017 before facing Swans also at the Bassendean venue.
