WITH just three weeks of the 2022 WAFLW home and away season remaining, Subiaco moved closer towards snatching a finals position with another big win in Round 14 while Peel Thunder beat Swan Districts, and East Fremantle and Claremont kept on winning.
Round 14 of the WAFLW season got underway on Saturday at Mandurah's Lane Group Stadium with Peel Thunder winning to consolidate third position by beating the fourth placed Swan Districts 7.12 (54) to 1.3 (9).
Kate Bartlett kicked another three goals for Peel while Sabreena Duffy and Ebony Dowson had 18 disposals apiece. Abbygail Bushby gathered 21 touches for Swan Districts.
The other two matches took place on Sunday with Claremont proving too good for South Fremantle to all but lock up a top two position with the 13.13 (91) to 1.3 (9) win at Claremont's Revo Fitness Stadium.
Tessa Doumanis, Brooke Whyte and Tayla Thorogood all kicked three goals for Claremont while Kahra Sprylan finished with 12 possessions, 13 tackles and a goal for South Fremantle.
Subiaco then inched closer towards a finals position by beating West Perth 6.6 (42) to 1.1 (7) at Leederville Oval.
Hanna Dethlefsen kicked three goals for Subiaco and Jayme Harken racked up 33 disposals with Tarnica Golisano finishing with 29 touches and 15 tackles. Kaitlyn Roper finished with 20 possessions and eight tackles for West Perth.
Following 14 rounds of the 2022 WAFLW season, East Fremantle remains undefeated with a perfect 11-0 record to be clear on top of the ladder.
Claremont is also further clear in second position with a 9-2 record while Peel Thunder (6-5) stays in third spot and Swan Districts (5-7) is fourth.
Subiaco (5-6) is now just less than one percentage point outside of the top four ahead of South Fremantle (4-8) and West Perth (0-12).
The lone game in the WAFLW Reserves competition in Round 14 saw Swan Districts defeat Peel Thunder 6.9 (45) to 1.5 (11) at Mandurah's Lane Group Stadium.
Meanwhile in the Youth Girls Rogers Cup, the Round 14 action saw Peel Thunder beat Swan Districts 10.3 (63) to 9.6 (60) at Lane Group Stadium on Saturday.
Then on Sunday, South Fremantle defeated Claremont 8.10 (58) to 4.11 (35) at Revo Fitness Stadium, East Fremantle beat East Perth 10.13 (73) to 2.3 (15) at New Choice Homes Park, and Subiaco downed West Perth 5.1 (31) to 4.6 (30) at Leederville Oval.
WAFLW PREMIERSHIP SEASON – ROUND 14
PEEL THUNDER 7.12 (54) defeated SWAN DISTRICTS 1.3 (9)
Peel Thunder proved too strong for Swan Districts in Mandurah on Saturday in a rematch of the 2021 Grand Final.
The two teams were attempting to consolidate their position in the top four when they did battle on Saturday at Lane Group Stadium, and it was the reigning premiers Peel again proving too strong for Swan Districts.
The Thunder dominated from the outset to end up winning 7.12 (54) to 1.3 (9) to lock in third position on the WAFL ladder with three rounds of the season remaining while Swans are now only just clinging to fourth spot.
Peel dominated the opening quarter on home turf in the rematch of last year's Grand Final. The Thunder had the only seven scoring shots of the first term including goals to Kira Phillips and then two to Krystal Carter to go into the quarter-time break leading by 22 points.
Swan Districts only score of the first half was a rushed behind early in the second quarter. Peel managed another goal in the second term through Ella Roberts to see the reigning premiers lead by 30 points at the main break.
Swans first score off their own boot came early in the third quarter with a behind from Emily McGuire but Kate Bartlett finished out the term with her three goals of the afternoon to extend the Thunder lead to 50 points by three quarter-time.
Swans kicked the only goal of the last quarter courtesy of Ashley Sharp but it mattered little with Peel cruising to the 7.12 (54) to 1.3 (9) victory.
Kate Bartlett kicked another three goals in the win for the Thunder from 11 kicks. Krystal Carter also kicked two goals for Peel.
Sabreena Duffy played her first game of the season for Peel and first since last year's Grand Final triumph against Swans. She produced 18 possessions, three tackles and inside-50 entries.
Ebony Dowson continued her impressive form for the Thunder with another 18 disposals while Chloe Wrigley finished with 17 touches and eight tackles.
Gracie Fenton also had 15 touches, Ella Roberts 14, Greta McKinley 14 and Kaitlyn Srhoj 14.
Swan Districts' lone goal came courtesy of Ashley Sharp from her five kicks and two tackles.
Abbygail Bushby continued her strong form this season for Swans despite the loss and ended up contributing 21 possessions, six marks and four entries inside the forward 50.
Isabella Edgley also compiled 18 disposals for the black-and-whites, Ruby Mahony 17, Jaime Henry 15 and Lauren Osborne 15.
CLAREMONT 13.13 (91) defeated SOUTH FREMANTLE 1.3 (9)
Claremont all but locked away a top two finish in 2022 with an 82-point victory against South Fremantle on Saturday at Revo Fitness Stadium.
It took less than two minutes for Claremont to kick the first goal of the game through Tessa Doumanis. Just a minute later Ella Smith also kicked truly and the Tigers were off to a flying start.
Claremont's next five scoring shots were all behinds, but they closed out the first term with goals to Tayla Thorogood and a second to Smith while holding South Fremantle scoreless to lead by 29 points at quarter-time.
Brooke Whyte opened the second quarter with Claremont's fifth goal of the game. Sarah Garstone, White, Thorogood and Doumanis all added goals before half-time to see the Tigers in control leading by 62 points at the major break.
Thorogood kicked a third goal to open the second half for Claremont in perfect fashion in under a minute before South Fremantle's first score of the contest came through a behind from Poppy Stockwell.
The Bulldogs then kicked their only goal of the match through Kahra Sprylan but just before three quarter-time Eva Campo kicked another for the Tigers to put them on top by 75 points.
Claremont then kicked the only goal of the last term thanks to Whyte and that saw them claim the commanding 13.13 (91) to 1.3 (9) victory.
Tessa Doumanis kicked three goals for Claremont from five kicks, three tackles and two marks.
Brooke Whyte also kicked three goals for the Tigers from 17 disposals and seven marks with Tayla Thorogood three goals well while Ella Smith booted two majors with 12 kicks, four inside 50s, three marks and three tackles.
Claudia Wright finished the contest amassing 24 possessions, eight inside 50s and seven tackles for Claremont with Mikayla Western compiling 15 touches, Kobi Nichols 14 and Sasha Goranova 13.
Matilda Dyke also had nine possessions, five tackles and 20 hit outs.
South Fremantle's lone goal for the afternoon came courtesy of Kahra Sprylan who also had 12 possessions and 13 tackles.
Poppy Stockwell gathered 14 disposals, Hunter Cronin 10, Tayla Hughes 10, Pia Durk 10 and Casey Byrne 10.
SUBIACO 6.6 (42) defeated WEST PERTH 1.1 (7)
Subiaco continued its push for a finals position with a 35-point win at Leederville Oval against West Perth on Sunday.
Subiaco is now only less than one percentage point outside of the top four with three rounds of the season remaining following the 6.6 (42) to 1.1 (7) win on Sunday afternoon.
Still chasing that elusive first win in the WAFLW competition and up against a Subiaco team in their best patch of form for the season, it was actually West Perth who started the better at Leederville Oval on Sunday.
The Falcons kicked the first goal of the game courtesy of Jeevna Heer, the only problem was they wouldn’t score again for the rest of the afternoon.
Subiaco got a goal back before quarter-time through Hanna Dethlefsen and kicked two more through Dethlefsen and Iesha Farmer in the second term to head into the half-time break leading by 13 points.
The Lions managed just the one more goal in the third quarter thanks to Kate Pocsidio and then two more in the fourth term by Dethlefsen and Abbey Dowrick to end up winning 6.6 (42) to 1.1 (7).
Hanna Dethlefsen produced an impressive all-round performance for Subiaco made up of three goals to go with 15 possessions, three tackles and two marks.
Subiaco's other goals came courtesy of Abbey Dowrick, Iesha Farmer and Kate Pocsidio.
Jayme Harken was outstanding for the Lions with 33 touches, seven inside-50 entries, five tackles and three marks.
Tarnica Golisano also gathered 29 disposals for the Lions while laying 15 tackles and Dowrick collected 25 possessions, Amy Mulholland 19, Tiah Toth 14, Madizen Wilkins 14 and Hayley Corlett 14.
Cheney Armstrong finished with 10 touches and 19 hit outs as well in the ruck for Subiaco.
West Perth's lone goal was from Jeevna Heer who also had eight kicks and two marks for the game.
Kaitlyn Roper gathered 20 possessions for the Falcons while laying eight tackles. Megan Norbury also had 19 touches, Keely Byrne 19, Liliana Grassenis 11 (12 tackles) and Karla Stagg 11.
