WANFLUA - Team of the Half Century

The WANFLUA Team of the Half Century comprises three field umpires, three boundary umpires, two goal umpires and one emergency field and goal umpire in accordance with current Grand Final selection policy.

Umpires were first nominated in Teams of the Decade but there were varying numbers in each decade because the one, two and three umpire systems were implemented in different eras.

The Team of the Half Century was announced at the Hyatt on Friday June 14 with more than 300 people packing the Terrace Ballroom for the announcement, made by Channel 10 newsreader Tim Gossage.

The field umpires' team of Ross Capes, Ray Montgomery and Len Gardner together with emergency umpire Grant Vernon officiated in 1051 games including 20 Grand Finals. Those Grand Finals began with Gardner's first in 1953 and culminated with Vernon's appointment as the emergency for the 1996 AFL Grand Final.

The boundary umpiring team was just as impressive. Dan Gooch, John Devine and Ron Hall ran in 592 games and 16 Grand Finals with Gooch the only current umpire selected in the final team. He was thrilled by the honour, as was Devine who rated it as equal to any honour he had received.

There was no greater example of teamwork than when the goal umpires were announced. The league appointed goal umpiring teams in the 50s and the team of Carter and Rose stood out.

The duo umpired 10 consecutive Grand Finals from 1955-1964 so it was fitting that they were named as a pair joined the team of the half century together. Carter passed away several years ago but 77-year-old Rose was in attendance to receive the award.
