Swans Skipper Riding Highs And Lows Of Season

For Swan Districts it has been one step forward and two steps back in the Sullivan Logistics WAFL competition this year.

Swans were comprehensively outplayed by Peel Thunder on Saturday, leaving the club in second last place on the ladder.

That result was a source of frustration for Swan Districts captain Jesse Turner, who declared the win over Perth the previous weekend as one of the best he’s been involved in at the club.

The black and whites came from 39 points down against the Demons to record their fourth best comeback win from a half-time deficit to re-ignite their season.

Swans kicked 7.1 to 0.2 in a remarkable final quarter.

“It was a pretty special win,” Turner said.

“It was a big day for the club with us having our first Big Freeze event to help raise money for MND, and we started terribly coming off a poor performance last week.

“At half time, we spoke about just chipping away at the lead and focusing on one contest at a time and we were able to wrestle momentum our way and once we got it, to the boys’ credit we played our best footy of the season to date.”

That win was the club’s third this year.

“We feel we’ve been in almost all our games this season and have just had 10-to-15-minute lapses which has cost us,” he said.

“For us, if our attitude and effort are right and we stay focused on the game plan our coaches give us, we feel we can match it with anyone.

“It’s up to us now to keep working hard throughout the week and hopefully continuing the form we found in the second half.”

Turner was outstanding against the Demons with 30 disposals as he continues to dominate in the Sullivan Logistics WAFL competition.

“I think I’m playing well,” Turner said.

“It’s always hard for me because I judge how I go with whether we win or lose.

“So, in that case, I still feel I can go another level this season and I’ll be doing everything I can to help us win more games.”

The 182-game veteran made his debut in 2015 against East Perth, and while he hasn’t played as much finals football as he’d like, Turner is a regular State representative and was part of the Kia WAFL State Team’s win over South Australia last month.

“To pick up a win at home in front of all the WAFL supporters, friends and family was a real highlight,” Turner explained.

“Adam Read does a great job bringing the whole squad together and even though we are only a group for a short time, we really are a close squad, and I think it has shown the last two games we have played.

“Hopefully we can keep the wins coming in the next few years.”

The 30-year-old hopes to lead Swans into a new era of success and that includes helping to mentor teenage sensation Leo Steed.

“I’ve played with a lot of impressive 18-year-olds, and he is head and shoulders the best I’ve played with,” Turner said.

“His attack on the ball, relentless pressure on the opposition and composure with the footy is something you rarely see for someone so young.

“I don’t have to see the rest of the draft class to know that he is one of the best players in this year’s draft and whatever AFL club picks him up will be lucky.

Swan Districts host the West Coast Eagles at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday at 2.30pm.
