Footy Fan Realises Dream

For Curtin Uni Wesley Football Club player Luke McLachlan, reaching 150 games is just the beginning of what McLachlan hopes to become – a 300 game player.

He started Auskick as a young child and eventually he found his way into the Perth Football League’s Integrated Competition through a friend’s recommendation at Fremantle CBC, and since then, he hasn’t looked back.

Instead, he’s powered ahead, discovering how football has given him essential life skills, such as building confidence, fostering relationships, developing leadership qualities, and even finding employment opportunities.

One of the most significant impacts football has had on Luke’s life is the boost in his self-confidence.

The sport has given him the platform to shine, helping him grow as a person and believe in his abilities.

As he progressed in his football journey, he became a mentor for the younger members of his team and the club.

It’s McLachlan’s dedication and commitment to the game which has been motivating to his peers and even his family.

McLachlan is Curtin Uni Wesley Football Club’s only player to have reached a record 150 games and the celebrations continued with the team recording a win against Warnbro in front of family and friends.

“It was awesome to have so many people in the Guard of Honour for me,” McLachlan beamed.

“I love playing football with my mates and I have made lots of friend playing football from all the teams in the competition.

“I want to play 300 games.”

McLachlan’s father, Phil, has been a constant source of support for him throughout his football journey.

Phil emphasizes that the Perth Football League Integrated Competition doesn’t just benefit the players; it positively impacts their families as well.

The pride Phil feels for Luke’s passion for football and his desire to play even more games is evident and highlights how being a part of the Perth Football League Integrated game has brought immense joy and fulfillment to their lives.

“It was a fantastic achievement for Luke who is passionate about football and tells me he wants to play 150 more games,” Phil said.

“Every game attended is a time to enjoy the fact that these players are getting a game of football.

“I am gob-smacked by the determination and enjoyment that we all receive being a part of the Perth Football League Integrated game.

Phil says the Integrated Competition is more than just a game of football and encourages others to witness the magic of Integrated Football, which caters to individuals with intellectual disabilities aged 16-60.

The Perth Football League Integrated Competition fosters inclusivity and participation, allowing more people to experience the joy of being part of the football community.

With 13 teams and growing, the competition serves as a shining example of the power of sport to bring people together.

“I always say to people, if you want to be uplifted in spirit, go and watch an Integrated Football Game, we have 13 teams and growing.”

WA All Abilities Football Association Executive Officer, Hayden Marchetto commends Luke’s remarkable achievement of reaching 150 games and emphasizes that the Integrated Competition is more than just a game; it is a fun and supportive environment where players can participate in the sport they love.

“This competition allows for more people to play our great game and be part of the football community,” Marchetto said.
