National Reconciliation Week: 27 May - 3 JuneMonday, May 27, 2024 - 3:10 PM

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to join in solidarity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to learn about our shared histories and culture while working together to achieve reconciliation in Australia.

National Reconciliation Week runs from 27 May – 3 June, with this year’s theme Now More Than Ever, a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will – and must – continue.

The West Australian Football Commission is proud to be a part of the Reconciliation Street Banner Program. The program runs each year, with colourful street banners flying across the State featuring artwork from an emerging Aboriginal artist.

The Reconciliation Week Street Banner Program offers a positive contribution towards reconciliation, increases the awareness of National Reconciliation Week throughout Western Australia and provides the opportunity to acknowledge the significant place of Aboriginal people and culture within our community.

Our banner is located in Kings Park Road and will add to the hundreds flying proud and high across Western Australia during National Reconciliation Week, encouraging us all to walk together in reconciliation.

Our banner will demonstrate our support for reconciliation and will commemorate two historically significant events in Australia’s reconciliation journey - 27 May marks the anniversary of the successful 1967 referendum and 3 June marks the anniversary of the Mabo decision.

This year’s artist is Renita Brown Nungurrayi. Renita is an emerging talent and an artist to watch. Renita creates intricate works with her own distinct mark making and style. She works diligently and patiently on her paintings allowing movement to develop naturally, reminiscent of the Tali (Sandhills) around Papunya. Renita's mother, Flora Brown Nakamarra is also a distinguished painter and they often come in together and paint side by side.

On Friday 31 May staff from the WAFC will take part in the Walk for Reconciliation at Langley Park.
