LeCras ready to impress at Draft Combine after injury layoff

West Perth talent Koby LeCras is one of seven WA talents looking to put his best foot forward in this week’s AFL National Draft Combine in Melbourne.

The son of Falcons champion and former North Melbourne tall Brent and nephew of West Coast premiership forward Mark enjoyed an impressive start to 2026 before an untimely knee injury in his senior WAFL debut in April de-railed his season.

It came a week after an eye-catching three-goal performance for the AFL Academy against Richmond VFL in Melbourne.

But the 18-year-old is now nearing full fitness and will be able to test in the 2km time trial and the 20m sprint this week alongside fellow West Aussies Leo Steed (Swan Districts), Harvey Spawton-Guy (West Perth), Heath Mellody, George Gale, Benji van Rooyen (Claremont) and Cam Maynard (South Fremantle).

“I haven’t had enough change of direction yet, so we’ll just do those two things and hopefully go well,” LeCras said before flying out at Perth Airport on Wednesday morning.

LeCras said he was delighted to get an invitation for the AFL National Combine, meaning five of more AFL clubs have shown interest, despite being limited to a handful of games this season.

LeCras reflected on his tough season on the injury front and the advice he got from his family, including uncle Mark who suffered a serious injury during his Eagles days back in 2012.

“He just said ‘do all your rehab, make sure you get everything done you can, and also, just try and learn as much as you can, soak it all up, because it only happens once, your draft year’,” he said.

“Mark and Dad have been really good for me. They’ve given me lots of advice over the journey, but they’ve also tried to stay out of it a little bit.

“I’ve learnt some things that I probably wouldn’t have learnt if I was playing. It’s made me look at football in a little bit of a different way.

“It hasn’t been the perfect year, but I’m really grateful for the people I’ve got around me.”

The three-day AFL National Draft Combine gets underway in Melbourne on Thursday, while the AFLW version started on Wednesday.

The WA State Combine is happening at UWA Sports Centre and WA Athletics Centre on Sunday, October 11, with nine of the State’s AFL hopefuls and four AFLW prospects taking part.
