The West Australian Football Commission congratulates the 17 finalists in the 2023 Rio Tinto WA Football Volunteer of the Year Award.

The finalists include Abbie Durtanovich (Mosman Park JFC/Claremont District), Gail Della-Marta (Booragoon JFC/East Fremantle District), Barry Nicholls (Bayswater FC/East Perth District), Nicole Stevens (Mines Rovers FC/Goldfields Region), Jason Richter (Boxwood Hill FC/Great Southern Region), Nathan Twoomey (Kununurra JFC/Kimberley Region), Elle Armitage (Lancelin Ledge Point FC/Midlands Region), Murray Dowding (South Mandurah JFC/Peel District), Jared Wilson (Redcliffe JFC/Perth District), Bryce Durbridge (Townsite Eagles FC/Fortescue NFL/ Pilbara District), David Morgan (Jandakot FC/South Fremantle District), Mark Delane (Dunsborough FC/Southwest Region), Michelle Richards (Sorrento Duncraig JFC/Subiaco District), Taryn Shinnick (Parkerville JFC/Swan District), Dean Lafrenais (Wanneroo JFC/West Perth District), Graeme Dawson (Corrigin FC/Wheatbelt Region).

There were over 1400 nominations recognising the state’s football volunteers.

The Rio Tinto WA Football Volunteer of the Year is one of the most highly valued awards in the football industry, an initiative that has been adopted nationally.

The program recognises the dedication and tireless efforts of our football volunteers from team managers to trainers, coaches to canteen workers, these volunteers are the lifeblood of football in this state.

There are currently over 45,000 volunteers who contribute to the success of not only a club but match day activities. 

They ensure that AFL games can be played in every corner of Western Australia, making it possible for aspiring players and enthusiastic fans to experience the joy of the game.

Troy Kirkham, Executive Manager Game Development and Community Football at the WAFC congratulated the finalists and acknowledged their outstanding efforts and the vital role they play in uniting the football community.

“Well done to the finalists who have been recognised for their outstanding efforts by the football community,” Kirkham said.

“Their commitment ensures that the sport continues to thrive, providing opportunities for players and spectators alike to experience the passion and excitement of our great game.

“Volunteering is a selfless job and the WAFC would like to thank all our volunteers who turn up each and every week to make sure AFL games can be played right across the state.”
