Throughout June, the West Australian Football Commission (WAFC) will be celebrating Women in Coaching Month, which recognises the contribution of women and girls in coaching roles.
Now in its fourth year, the 2024 theme focusses on Accessibility for All and strives to highlight a number of transferable skills women possess that could make coaching an ideal career pathway – across any level or league.
This month involves highlighting the female coaching pathway and providing opportunities to female players to transition into coaching.
A number of activities will be on offer including education sessions, professional development opportunities, networking and online events – all designed to support women in coaching.
The state’s two AFL clubs, West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Football Club will each run coaching workshops focusing on wellbeing, leadership, football operations and hear from guest speakers including West Coast AFLW coach Daisy Pearce and Fremantle Football Club’s AFLW coach Lisa Webb.
WAFC Female & Diversity Coach Coordinator, Beatrice Devlyn said this initiative is essential for growing women’s football and highlighted the collaboration between AFL, WAFL and community clubs is important to creating a strong support system for female coaches.
"Women in Coaching Month is about recognizing the significant contributions of female coaches and providing them with the tools and opportunities to thrive in their roles,” Devlyn said.
"These workshops provide a unique opportunity for women to gain insights and knowledge from experienced coaches and industry professionals.
"It's wonderful to see so many women passionate about coaching and willing to take on leadership roles within football."
Women in Coaching Month aims to encourage more women to pursue coaching careers and ensure gender is not a barrier to our great game.
