Players still competing for this year’s premiership have dominated the WAFL EGT Colts Team of the Year.
Claremont (5), West Perth (4), Subiaco (4) and Swan Districts (3) contributed 16 of the 24 players named in the side, with Subiaco’s John Mansbridge named as coach.
West Australian Football Commission State Talent Manager Adam Jones believes every player thoroughly deserves selection.
“It’s a really talented team with a number of players having played state football and others who have also transitioned up to senior football,” Jones said.
“Being selected in this team not only highlights a player’s talent but also their consistency over the course of the season.”
Jones explained how the team was selected.
“We get clubs to nominate players from their clubs in the position they should be considered in,” Jones said.
“I then put a rough team together as a starting point for discussion during a meeting with all WAFL clubs and then the final team is decided.”
“The team is picked based on the best players in each position.”
?Of the group, three players were given a taste of League football.
Hamish Davis from the Tigers, Kayle Gerreyn at West Perth and Demon Cooper Moore all made the step to the next level.
“Some of the players have played League footy this year which shows the quality of football they were playing at colts level,” Jones said.
“The colts system is a pathway to higher levels of football, and for some of the players selected in the team to have already made that transition is a true testament to their ability.”
The team is stacked with players still engaged in the EGT Colts Finals Series which supports Jones’ theory.
“There have been a number of really consistent teams in the colts this year and it’s no surprise that the team is made up of a large number of players from those clubs.
