WAFL/WAFLW Wrap Round 2Wednesday, April 16, 2025 - 11:34 AM

Round two of the WAFL premiership season kicked off under lights on Friday night, and it was another round of interesting results.

Predicted contenders fell, undefeated teams continued their winning ways and stars dominated everywhere. Let’s dive into how it all played out:

West Coast (73) v Subiaco (92)

The Eagles and Lions battled it out in slippery conditions at Mineral Resources Park and the Lions survived a late surge from an inaccurate West Coast side.

The Eagles had more scoring shots for the game but Subiaco, led by Ryan Borchet’s five goal haul, got the chocolates by 19 points.

Archer May continued his impressive start to the season, while Marlin Corbett gathered 28 disposals to lead all comers.

Lucca Grego showed more promising signs, while Darby McCarthy and Matt Flynn played well also.

Tim Kelly returned to the WAFL for the first time in eight years and had 20 disposals, five tackles and a goal.

South Fremantle (80) v Peel Thunder (31)

Trey Ruscoe kicked four goals for the Bulldogs as they once again showed why they may be the team to beat in 2025.

While Quinton Narkle (31 disposals, 9 marks, 1 goal), Neil Erasmus (28 disposals, 7 tackles, 6 marks), Michael Sellwood (28 disposals, 9 marks) and Cooper Simpson (28 disposals, 6 marks) possessed plenty of the football for the Thunder, they had no multiple goal-scorers and were beaten in nearly every major stat category.

Tom Blechynden, Jake Florenca and ex-AFL trio Jamaine Jones, Isiah Winder and Matt Parker all contributed strongly to the Bulldogs comfortable 49-point victory.

Claremont (117) v East Fremantle (37)

The Tigers flexed their muscles at Revo Fitness Stadium, leading all afternoon to take down the Sharks.

Milan Murdock battled typically hard for the visiting side collecting 29 disposals and kicking a goal, but the contributors were few and far between for East Freo.

Stars Jye Bolton and Oliver Eastland dominated, while Samuel Alverez grabbed 25 disposals.

Kieran Gowdie kicked four goals, as did Jaiden Hunter, who had made a successful WAFL return from back and knee injuries.

Zac Mainwaring also booted three majors.

East Perth (97) v Swan Districts (42)

Jesse Turner remains the leading ball getter in the competition, following up his Round 1 leather poisoning with 36 touches again in Round 2.

Jye Chalcraft had 35 disposals and kicked a goal while recruit Connor Blakely collected 31 of his own, but it meant little for the Swans as East Perth’s talent shone through.

Zachary Raykos had 31 disposals and Tom North laid nine tackles, while Thomas Medhat, Sebit Kuek, Ben Middleton, Thomas Graham and William Cassidy all kicked multiple goals, as the Royals accessed impressive production from a wealth of players.

East Perth moved to 2-0 for the season, while the Black Ducks face an 0-3 start if they can’t upset the Bulldogs in Round 3.

West Perth (50) v Perth (61)

Saturday night footy came to Joondalup as West Perth hosted their first home game of the season, but it was the Demons who thwarted the Falcon’s plans by running out 11-point winners.

Zack Derkson, Blake Schlensog and Riley Wills all converted several majors while Brandon Parfitt adds to his early season dominance with another 35 disposals.

Austin Davis, Corey Byrne and Charlie Constable were all fantastic for the Red Legs, while for West Perth plenty was left on the shoulders of four-time Bernie Naylor medallist Tyler Keitel.

He kicked four goals to add to his six-goal-haul last weekend, but the Falcons could not find avenues to goal outside of him and regular goalkicker Keegan Knott.

WAFLW ROUND 3 RESULTS

West Perth (73) V Perth (14)

The Falcons registered their first win of the season off the back of some stellar play from Mia Russo, as well as goalkickers Chloe Metcalf, Jamarah Walley and Kayla van den Heever.

Perth dropped to 0-3 despite impressive performances from Holly Britton and Isabella Shannon.

Swan Districts (13) V Subiaco (37)

Surprise package Subiaco’s outstanding start to the season continued as recruits Lisa Steane and Paige Sheppard led from the front, gathering a combined 50 disposals.

Left footed young gun Layla Quinn-Schofield kicked three goals and is one to watch in 2025.

Swan Districts kicked 1.7 as the big sticks eluded them, but Carys D’Addario and Jaime Henry both performed commendably.

South Fremantle (38) V Peel Thunder (23)

South Fremantle are also undefeated through three games after they knocked off the Thunder on Saturday evening.

Tahleah Mulder dominated, posting 34 disposals, seven tackles, five marks and a goal, whilst teammates Holly Ifould and Alyssa Smogavec grabbed 22 touches each.

Peel were led by Chloe Wrigley, the competitions leading disposal getter who added another 31, while Ebony Bilcich gathered 26 and Tess Hall kicked two goals.

Claremont (48) V East Fremantle (37)

Finally, it was the Tigers turn to remain undefeated, putting up 48 points for the second consecutive week.

Claremont were boosted by a full team effort as Jacinta Valentini and Ella Gilbey added four goals between them.

Alicia Blizard is a problem for defenders across the WAFLW and kicked another two majors, whilst young-gun Noa McNaughton grabbed 18 disposals and laid four tackles.
