We take a look at the biggest story lines from Round 9 of the WAFL and Round 10 of the WAFLW competitions.

East Fremantle’s perfect weekend

East Fremantle made it five wins from as many games over the weekend across their WAFL and WAFLW ranks.

The Sharks celebrated captain Kyle Baskerville and veteran Jono Marsh’s 100th games in style, defeating West Perth at Joondalup’s HIF Health Insurance Oval on Saturday.

Sandover Medal fancy Milan Murdock starred once again with 29 disposals, eight clearances and a goal, with young gun Jack Cleaver (29 and 10 clearances) also impressing.

Spearhead Cody Leggett and livewire Mitch Zadow booted three goals apiece as East Freo responded to their derby demolition in style.

The Falcons had a milestone of their own that day with dual premiership player and five-time best-and-fairest winner Shane Nelson reaching 250 games.

Nelson battled hard all day with 28 possessions.

The Sharks were also comfortable victors in the Reserves and Colts against West Perth.

Their women’s sides defeated Perth in the WAFLW and Rogers Cup respectively.

Ball magnet Tom Grylls was outstanding in the colts with 31 disposals and a goal, while Ben Wood kicked four goals as their side jumped to the top of the EGT Colts ladder with South Fremantle having the bye.

Noa McNaughton (17 disposals and 10 tackles) and Anjelique Raison (16 and a goal) were among the standouts in the Sharks’ tight WAFLW win.

Sandover medallist shine as Tigers overcome brave Lions

Jye Bolton put up a season-high 39 possessions and fellow Sandover medallist Bailey Rogers also starred at Claremont overcame a brave Subiaco outfit under lights at Sullivan Logistics Stadium on Saturday evening.

Bolton was on track for 60 touches at one point, amassing 15 in the opening term alone before Travis Shearer helped slow him down.

Rogers started forward and kicked the opening goal of the match before spending time in the midfield where he finished with 27 disposals.

The Lions held a slender lead at three-quarter time before Claremont kicked into gear in the final term with three goals to one.

State representative Zac Mainwaring booted three in the opening half, while former Essendon-listed key forward Jaiden Hunter also finished with three for the match.

Ollie Eastland won the ruck battle, tough nut Ben Elliott and defender Anthony Davis were also among the standouts for the victors.

Elliott produced an excellent two-way performance with 26 possessions, seven tackles and a goal-of-the-week contender.

Ex-Docker Stefan Giro, youngster Charlie Burke, defender Galen Savigni were among the Lions’ best, as were twin towers Jack Mayo and Ryan Borchet who kicked three goals apiece.

Dynamic Demons duo dominant against Eagles

Perth’s dynamic midfield duo Brandan Parfitt and Charlie Constable dominated in the battle of Lathlain against co-tenants West Coast on Saturday.

The pair combined for 70 disposals, 21 clearances and two goals as the Demons secured their sixth win of the season to get some breaking space inside the top five.

Forwards Lochie Paton (3.2) and Aaron Clarke (2.3) booted five goals between them to take their season tallies to 19 and 23 respectively.

Clay Hall pushed his case for an AFL recall at West Coast with 30 touches and six clearances, with Tom Gross, Harley Sparks and top AFL Mid-Season Draft selection Tom McCarthy also catching the eye.

Friday night colts thriller

Subiaco and Claremont played out a thrilling Friday night EGT WAFL Colts clash at Sullivan Logistics Stadium.

Dwayne Ryder was the hero for the Lions, booting the match-winning goal in the dying minutes with a stunning effort after picking the ball up from the boundary.

Lucas Santich and Toby Jones were the stars of the show in the midfield for Subi, while speedster Max Hansen-Knarhoi earned player-of-the-round honours after an exciting, four-goal, 23-disposal performance which provided a much-needed spark for Claremont.

WAFLW powerhouses remain undefeated

Subiaco and Claremont won their eight games of the season to remain undefeated in the WAFLW.

The ladder-leading Lions defeated Swan Districts by 21 points at home on Saturday morning, while the Tigers easily accounted for Peel Thunder at Revo Fitness Stadium later that day.
