The West Australian Football Commission (WAFC) is delighted to announce an extension of its partnership with Healthway in a major boost for the game in this state.
The deal includes expansion of the WA Country Football League’s (WACFL) successful “Think Mental Health Round” into the WAFL competition in season 2022. The round aims to further strengthen the strong connection between Country Football and the WAFL whilst promoting mental health awareness.
East Fremantle Captain Matthew Jupp is a strong supporter of the concept.
“Mental health has become a priority at footy clubs. Checking in with teammates who are struggling emotionally because of form, injury or personal issues is crucial,” Jupp said.
Jupp, who grew up in Port Hedland, is excited about the WAFL and WACFL joining forces to promote the “Think Mental Health Round”.
“Playing all my junior footy in the north of the state I know the important role that football clubs play in connecting and enhancing regional communities. To promote the “Think Mental Health Round” on a state-wide basis is an exciting initiative and one that I am proud as a WAFL player to be part of” Jupp said.
Another key part of the initiative is to deliver healthier club environments at senior and junior levels this year.
The State Government’s funding assistance will allow the WAFC, with support from Healthway, to educate players in the WAFL and WAFLW on drug, alcohol and mental health awareness.
The WAFC maintains its push to promote healthy eating and drinking at Junior Football Clubs in WA as part of the on-going Principal Partnership between the Commission, Healthway and Go for 2&5.
WAFC Chief Executive Michael Roberts believes the partnership provides several long-term benefits.
“For players, understanding the importance of mental health is critical. So too is the ability to identify teammates, relatives or friends who need emotional support,” Roberts said.
In conjunction with educating players on drugs and alcohol, the WAFC and Healthway are playing a significant role in the community.
“We remain committed to reducing unhealthy brands from football clubs and encourage junior players to make healthier eating and drinking choices at club canteens.
WA football is proud to be continuing its partnership with Healthway and the positive message it sends to players at every level” Roberts said.
Through the “Think Mental Health” campaign, Healthway will also become the Premier partner of the WA Football League.
