The Perth Demons have claimed back-to-back premierships at the 2023 Wheelchair Super Sunday event at HBF Arena.
Perth defeated the West Coast Eagles by 10 points in an entertaining and high scoring contest (94-84) on Sunday, the club’s second successive flag and the first time the feat has been completed in this competition.
For the Eagles, it was a wonderful achievement to reach the Grand Final in their first season.
Wheelchair Super Sunday, supported by the Activ Foundation, featured five teams, with Subiaco, East Perth and Swan Districts also fielding sides
Hayden Marchetto, Executive Officer at the WA All Abilities Football Association, is delighted the competition is going from strength to strength.
“Now in its third season, the WA Wheelchair Football League led by Ryan Zilioli has shown remarkable growth and improvement,” Marchetto said.
“The league has enjoyed an increase in participation numbers, with the West Coast Eagles joining the competition in 2023, becoming the fifth side in the competition.
“Along with expansion, there has been a significant enhancement in the standard of play.
“The players, many of whom have been involved since the league's inception, have developed their skills, strategies, and understanding of the game, leading to more competitive and engaging matches.
“This progression reflects the dedication and talent of the players while highlighting the positive impact of the league and the connection to community.”
The event capped off a huge year for Wheelchair Football in WA with two of Sunday’s players, Ben Green from the Eagles and Rob Petersen from the Perth Demons also representing WA at the AFL Wheelchair Championships in Melbourne.
