WA has produced its best performance at the 2024 Marsh U18 Girls National Championships, beaten in a high quality match against South Australia in Adelaide.
Coming off the back of a challenging encounter against Victoria Country two weeks ago, the WA team finished its campaign with a 21-point defeat to the South Australians at Thebarton Oval.
WA produced its best football of the Championships, but poor conversion in the second and third quarters proved costly as South Australia booted five goals one to six behinds.
Key defender Evie Cowcher with 17 disposals and five marks was awarded WA’s MVP over the three games, while Olivia Wolmarans was best on ground against SA and was outstanding with 18 disposals and two goals.
Small forward Lucy Greenwood also chipped in with three handy goals.
All seven goals were scored by under-age players who will be back next year.
Taya Chambers, Natasha Entwistle, Tiani Teakle, Lily Paterson and Noa McNaughton did their AFLW Draft chances no harm with solid contributions against quality opposition.
Despite failing to win a match at the Championships WA coach Beau McDonald was proud of the side’s efforts.
“The improvement we saw from the first game to the last was significant, and despite entering the Championships missing key players, the group showed great commitment which will hold many players in good stead as they continue their footy journey,” McDonald said.
