The West Australian Football Commission recently hosted a workshop as part of an innovative program to develop junior umpiring in the state.
The program, called “Fostering a Love of Umpiring”, is supported by the State Government through the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries and Lotterywest .
The aim is to help foster connection and a sense of belonging for junior umpires as well as have having a focus on enhancing the professional growth and expertise of Junior Umpiring Coaches.
The initiative aims to empower umpire coaches to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of junior umpiring, creating a sustainable and thriving umpiring community.
This year has seen a 50% increase in the number of Junior Umpire Coaches with over 150 coaches in positions across the nine Districts.
Umpiring Clubs Specialist at the West Australian Football Commission Courtney Gibson detailed what was covered in the workshop.
“It was a rewarding day of reflection, learning, and connection, celebrating the dedication and commitment of our volunteer umpire coaches in community football,” Gibson said.
“Their active engagement and passion have set a strong foundation for ongoing development and collaboration, paving the way for a positive future in the umpiring community.”
This year’s program, delivered by experienced facilitator Matt Angus, included a pre-season and post-season workshop for Umpire Squad Coaches and a Match Day Coaching workshop, with a specific focus on engaging and supporting umpires on game day.
Junior Umpire Coaches were also supported with training and game day visits from WAFC Umpiring staff throughout the season.
The program included an end of season workshop, which was an opportunity for Junior Umpire Coaches to review and reflect on the year.
Coaches reflected on achievements and discussed future growth areas to elevate the junior umpiring experience.
The workshop concluded with a sundowner and social lawn bowls as a recognition of the Junior Umpire Coaches’ dedication throughout the year.
