In this week’s edition of Country Catch Up, we take a look at the best moments across the 2025 Nutrien Ag Country Football Championships.

Two-point thriller in Div 3 decider

This was the best grand final of the lot.

Lower South West completed an undefeated Division Three campaign by holding off a fast-finishing Mortlock by two points in the first decider of the day on Sunday.

Lowers dominated the opening half with lively goalsneak Ashley Wallam booting three goals and providing excellent defensive pressure inside forward 50.

Co-Captain Brett Wilson was another big performer for the victors, splitting his time between the forward-line and ruck.

Mortlock stormed back into the contest with a stunning four-goals-to-none third term, cutting the margin back to four points at three-quarter time.

Former Claremont young gun Peter Coles nearly snatched a stunning win for Mortlock, booting a late goal and taking another couple of big marks inside 50 in the dying seconds, but couldn’t convert his opportunities.

From the bottom to the top

Great Southern’s redemption tale was complete after knocking off rivals Upper Great Southern in Sunday’s Division Two to book their spot in the top flight for next year’s championships.

The unbeaten GSFL prevailed by 31 points – 8.4 (52) to 2.9 (21) - in a one-sided Division Two decider at Sullivan Logistics Stadium.

It came a year after Great Southern won the Division Three grand final.

They had winners all over the ground, from key defender Bodhi Stubber to half-back running machine Morgan Davies, midfield ball magnet Darcy Wallinger, link-up forward and captain Isaac Baum and exciting goal-kicker Jyrin Woods who kicked a game-high four majors.

Jayden Scott was awarded the Nutrien Ag Solutions Medal for best-afield in the grand final after a brilliant four-quarter performance.

Is it a Bird?

A straight-shooting Avon caused a Division One upset over the previously-undefeated Peel on Saturday to keep their grand final hopes alive with Quinn Bird the hero.

Bird’s final-minute goal gave last year’s finalists a stunning three-point win – 6.0 (36) to 4.9 (33) - after they trailed for the majority of the contest.

Former St Kilda big man Tom Lee and ex-Subi talent Kaidyn Fullgrabe, both previous winners of the Division One fairest-and-best award, were huge in the come-from-behind win.

But their chances were dashed the following game as Goldfields came from behind for a thrilling one-point victory.

South West go back-to-back

South West made it back-to-back Division One titles with a hard-fought win over fellow country footy powerhouse Peel in the final game of the championships on Sunday.

The SWFL earned redemption after going down to the Cavaliers on the opening day of the carnival on Friday, going undefeated from then on.

Ruckman Jack Fletcher was awarded the Nutrien Ag Solutions Medal as the best player in the decider, with the Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault product also making the All-Stars team.

Former Docker Jason Carter also starred for the victors with a dominant midfield display.

Brothers in arms

The Stubbs brothers – Sam, Ben and Daniel – joined forces for the Goldfields, just weeks after former Demons star Sam retired from the WAFL.

The trio, who also play together for Mines Rovers, featured in the GFL side which finished with a 2-2 record in Division One including a thrilling one-point win over Avon on day two.

Sam, who booted 81 goals in 66 league games for the Demons and also earned an opportunity to train for a spot on the Dockers’ list, was named in the carnival All-Stars team alongside GFL teammate Richard Bourne.

Goal of the carnival?

Peel Cavaliers won their second CBH Group Colts Division One title in a row, getting over the line against South West in tough finale at The Good Grocer Park in East Fremantle.

Peel and Rockingham young gun Riley Crowd was named best-afield after a strong four-quarter performance, while the Clem Bray Medal for the best emerging player across the colts competitions went to Peel big man Trent Robertson, a 16-year-old ruck from Halls Head who looks an exciting talent.

But it was goalsneak Saul McCann with a stunning goal from the boundary in the final term which put the result beyond doubt.

McCann finished with three majors, showing his class under pressure in a scintillating performance.

Red Dog upset

Kimberley Spirit were the team to beat in Division Two after an unblemished opening day in the CBH Group Colts at Guildford Grammar on Thursday.

Led by silky-skilled midfielder Jock Mosquito and talent forward Liam Unicomb, the Spirit qualified finished atop Division Two to book their place in the grand final against Regional Districts on Friday in East Fremantle.

But in a stunning turnaround from their clash the previous day won by Kimberley, the Red Dogs - made up of players from the Upper Great Southern, Lower South West, Ongerup, Eastern Districts, Esperance and Goldfields competitions – prevailed by 46 points in a statement performance.

Timothy George, who plays for Boulder in the Goldfields, won the best-on-ground medal, while his club teammate Thomas Coughlan booted three goals in a lively display.

For Kimberley, Unicomb kicked four of his team’s six majors.

South’s big bag

Former Subiaco big man Jake South was the premier goal-kicker across the Nutrien Ag Solutions Country Football Championships, booting a competition-high 15 majors.

The Central Wheatbelt talent’s efforts earned him All-Stars selection as his team narrowly missed the Division Three grand final.

South kicked multiple goals in each of his three games, including a staggering nine in the CWFL’s big win over North Midlands.

Historic four-way tie

For the first time in Nutrien Ag Solutions Country Football Championships history, there was a four-way tie for the Division Two fairest-and-best medal.

The Bud Byfield Medal was split four ways with Great Southern stars Morgan Davies and Isaac Baum joining Central Midlands Coastal on-baller Gus Devitt and Ongerup veteran and Subiaco premiership gun Justin Joyce as the joint winners.

All four players finished on 16 votes apiece, four ahead of Eastern Districts’ Erick Bashemule.

Davies and Baum were instrumental in the GSFL’s title charges with consistent carnivals, with both among the best in the decider.

Still got it

Brett Peake is showing no signs of slowing down, even in his 40s.

The Fremantle and St Kilda forward was an integral part of Great Southern's title-winning campaign, booting the most goals in the Division Two competition with seven majors.

The 42-year-old, who these days plays for the Great Southern Football League's newest team Albany Sharks, produced some classy finishes across the carnival and is still as fit as ever.

Ex-St Kilda and Claremont big man Tom Lee, 34, was another former AFL-listed player to light it up during the champs with eight goals.

Lee was named among Avon's best in three out of four games to earn All-Star selection.
