WA's top female footballers take to Optus Stadium

WA's top female footballers will take to the hallowed turf of Optus Stadium this Saturday and showcase their skills in a curtain raiser to the West Coast Eagles clash against Port Adelaide. The game, which will be the second women's game held at the venue, will see the WA Football Commission State 18s academy players take on the West Coast Eagles high performance female academy players.  Former North Melbourne and Eagles star Drew Petrie will lead the Eagles academy side and coaching the WA State 18s academy team is former Eagles Premiership player Adam Selwood. Round 6 match previews

ROUND 6 of the 2018 WAFL season sees four fascinating fixtures spread across Saturday and Sunday as the players in the competition also look to cement their spots in next week's State game. Three of the four Round 6 matches take place at 2.15pm on Saturday afternoon including Peel Thunder and Claremont doing battle at Bendigo Bank Stadium. Former AFL stars strengthen WAFL and State team

THE strength of the WAFL competition has only been heightened with experienced former AFL players including Nick Suban, Rhys Palmer, Sharrod Wellingham and Kane Mitchell who have been included in the State squad for next Saturday's clash with South Australia. The WAFL has been a strong competition now highlighted in recent years by five consecutive State game victories including against powerhouses the VFL and SANFL, and the strength of the league has helped ensure the attraction of quality, experienced former AFL players. There was again a bevy of them who returned to the WAFL in 2018 and that includes Suban, Palmer, Wellingham and Mitchell who have been included in the State squad for next Saturday's clash against the SANFL in Adelaide. Around the Grounds Round 6

Round 6 of the WAFL sees Peel Thunder host Claremont this Saturday afternoon, with games also taking place at Fremantle Community Bank Oval and Leederville Oval. The local footy action concludes on Sunday in at East Fremantle Oval where the Sharks and Royals clash heads.  There will be heaps happening around the grounds including fun zones, pop-up food and beverage outlets and competitions for the whole family. 2018 WA State Academy player intake

The first intake of players for the 2018 WA State Academy has been completed. This includes 47 players in the 16s age group and 38 in the 18s age group, including seven 17-year-old development players. A second intake of 18s players will occur in the coming weeks.   WAFC Executive Manager Talent and Football Operations Scott Baker welcomed all of the players to the Academy program and congratulated them on their selection. M & J Chickens Player of the Round

THERE were plenty of standout performers across Round 5 of the WAFL putting their hands up for M & J Chickens Player of the Round honours, but in the end it was East Perth co-captain Patrick McGinnity who simply couldn't be overlooked. South Fremantle's Shane Hockey and Brandon Donaldson put in impressive performances in the tight contest of the round as the Bulldogs beat Claremont in Albany. Meanwhile, Andrew Strijk, Tyler Keitel and Blake Wilhelm were among West Perth's dominant figures in a thumping of Perth while Corey Gault was best afield as Swan Districts accounted for East Fremantle. TABtouch Team of Round 5

ROUND 5 of the WAFL was played across Saturday and Sunday and right across Western Australia with South Fremantle, West Perth, Swan Districts and East Perth all coming away with impressive victories. The round got underway with two matches in the traditional 2.15pm time slot on Saturday with West Perth beating Perth 17.11 (113) to 6.15 (51) at Lathlain Park and Swan Districts thumping East Fremantle 22.17 (149) to 9.5 (59) at Steel Blue Oval. The final match on Saturday took place at Albany's Centennial Stadium in the tightest match of the weekend with South Fremantle finishing strongly to defeat Claremont 12.13 (85) to 8.10 (58). Great Southern footy festival fun

The Great Southern Festival of Football proved to be a whole heap of fun for many young footballers in the region who got the opportunity to take part in a number of initiatives run by the Great Southern Football League (GSFL), City of Albany, WA Football League and the WA Football Commission last week. The festival kicked off on Wednesday with the GSFL ANZAC Celebration match between Railways FC and North Albany FC. The Railways coming out on top 16.7 (103) to the Kangas 11.8 (74). The following day saw more than 40 youth-aged footballers from both Albany and surrounding districts as far as Lake King take part in a masterclass clinic hosted by Claremont League assistant coach Kepler Bradley and current WA State 16s assistant coach Sam Cousens. Players undertook a number of AFL Draft combine testings including agility, sprints and vertical leap. Round 5 Colts Wrap

CLAREMONT, East Fremantle and Perth all recorded victories during the Super Colts Round at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday before East Perth won a thriller over Peel Thunder on Sunday. Three of the four Round 5 WAFL Colts matches took place at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday throughout the day before it concluded on Sunday afternoon at Leederville Oval. The Saturday action at the port began on Saturday morning with Claremont beating South Fremantle 11.6 (72) to 5.7 (37) for its second win of the season. Read More ...


Round 5 Match Report – East Perth v Peel Thunder

EAST Perth's impressive resurgence this WAFL season continued on Sunday with the Royals making it three consecutive victories beating Peel Thunder by 66 points at Leederville Oval.   The season couldn’t have started worse in Round 1 on Good Friday for East Perth with a 118-point defeat at the hands of Leederville Oval co-tenants Subiaco.   However, considering what the Lions have also done since to South Fremantle, Swan Districts and Claremont, that defeat doesn’t look too bad from the Royals and their response has been impressive. Round 5 Match Report – Perth v West Perth

WEST Perth continued its dominance this century over Perth with a 62-point victory at Lathlain Park on Saturday on the back of kicking eight of the first 10 goals of the game.   It was a dominant first half by West Perth with the Falcons doing as they pleased with the turnovers and lack of ability to hit targets, hold chest marks or handle the ball cleanly causing havoc for the Demons.   The Falcons took full advantage to lead by 53 points at half-time and the second half didn’t reach any great heights for either side in warm conditions, but West Perth cruised to the 17.11 (113) to 6.15 (51) victory. Round 5 Match Report – Claremont v South Fremantle

THE close game of Round 5 in the WAFL took place in Albany with South Fremantle overcoming the arm-wrestle with five goals to one in the last quarter to beat Claremont by 27 points.   It was the fifth time that a WAFL game has been held in Albany since 1989 but the first time at Centennial Stadium following the first four matches in the city were played at Collingwood Park.   An impressive crowd of 2664 people turned out to watch the most competitive match of the weekend in the WAFL too with little separating the Tigers and Bulldogs over the first three quarters. Round 5 Results

IT wasn’t a Round 5 of the 2018 WAFL season for the close contests with West Perth and Swan Districts hammering the bottom two teams of 2017 Perth and East Fremantle while South Fremantle continued its winning ways and East Perth sent another strong statement. The Round 5 action got underway on Saturday afternoon with two matches in the traditional 2.15pm timeslot and it was games to forget for the Demons and Sharks. They are attempting to improve on 2017 seasons that saw them win just three games apiece and battle it out for the wooden spoon.
