Subiaco send ominous message with second pre-season win

SUBIACO has recorded its second straight WAFL pre-season victory with the reigning premiers thumping Perth by 104 points on Saturday with West Perth, Swan Districts and Claremont also recording victories. Following a first-up 30-point win over South Fremantle last Friday night to open the pre-season fixtures, Subiaco again sent a statement of how seriously they are in attempting to make it back-to-back premierships with a 20.17 (137) to 5.3 (33) win over Perth at Lathlain Park on Saturday. It was a full round of WAFL pre-season fixtures on Saturday with West Perth also beating East Fremantle 14.12 (96) to 4.5 (29) at East Fremantle's ATOM Stadium, Swan Districts defeating Peel Thunder 12.6 (78) to 8.7 (55) at Bassendean's Steel Blue Oval and Claremont downing East Perth 11.9 (75) to 7.3 (45) at Leederville's Medibank Stadium. Leg break only blemish in encouraging summer for Swans

Thursday, March 5, 2015 - 12:04 AM - by Chris Pike
SWAN Districts coach Greg Harding is happy with the way the black-and-whites are coming together for the 2015 McDonald's WAFL Premiership season despite injuries to Todd Banfield and Nathan Blakely that could see them sidelined until the second half of the season. Swans became the big surprise packets of the 2014 season overcoming the loss of a host of key players coming into the year to put in a stunning performance to be in contention for the minor premiership for most of it before still finishing third despite a late season slump. The black-and-whites might have lost their home first semi-final to East Fremantle to be eliminated from the finals, but it was a terrific effort to just be there in the first place. Read More ...

Hampson adds premiership experience to Sharks

Wednesday, March 4, 2015 - 6:04 PM - by Chris Pike
GEORGE Hampson became one of the stories of the 2014 WAFL grand final playing on despite a hamstring injury and putting in a starring role in Subiaco's premiership and now he is hoping to help lead East Fremantle to the ultimate success in 2015. The 25-year-old played his 62nd and ultimately last game with Subiaco in last year's grand final where he hurt a hamstring in the first half, but went on to kick three crucial goals as the Lions upset East Perth to claim the premiership. However, Hampson had not played in Round 23, the second semi-final loss to East Perth or preliminary final win over East Fremantle leading into the grand final, and then when the dust had settled on the Lions' premiership, he decided it was time for him to try his hand elsewhere. New Demons provide spark ahead of 2015 season

Tuesday, March 3, 2015 - 12:08 PM - by Chris Pike
IT IS a distinctly new-look Perth coming into the 2015 McDonald's WAFL Premiership season with a new coach, football manager, captain and a bevy of player changes as the Demons attempt to rise up the ladder. The Demons started their 2014 season strongly beating Claremont and South Fremantle to start with, but they recorded just the one more victory the entire campaign including a horror 14-match losing streak to finish off with as they ended with the wooden spoon. The season included a changeover in coach with Damien McMahon departing and Trevor Williams taking over in a caretaker capacity and now since former Carlton AFL and East Fremantle WAFL premiership player Earl Spalding has taken over the helm. SUBIACO has opened the WAFL pre-season with a 30-point win over South Fremantle at Medibank Stadium on Friday night with the Lions using the chance to give their new recruits an early taste of playing for the reigning premiers. Subiaco ended up beating South Fremantle 12.8 (80) to 7.8 (50) at the Leederville venue on Friday night despite the Bulldogs starting strongly and kicking five goals to two in the first quarter. However, South Fremantle managed just the two more goals for the rest of the evening while Subiaco booted 10 to end up winning by 30 points. Read More ...

Recruits strive to help Subiaco to back-to-back WAFL flags

Friday, February 27, 2015 - 2:38 PM - by Chris Pike
SUBIACO pulled off a stunning grand final victory to claim the 2014 WAFL premiership and despite the loss of some key experienced players since, the Lions have topped up their playing stocks in an attempt to go back-to-back in 2015. Subiaco might have lost two of its last three games heading into last year's finals series and then lost the second semi-final to East Perth in the battle of the co-tenants, and just escaped against a wasteful East Fremantle in the preliminary final, but the Lions then put together a near perfect grand final performance against a heavily favoured East Perth. The result was a memorable premiership triumph for coach Jarrad Schofield and his team but like is the case at the end of most seasons, the Lions did suffer the loss of some key players.
