Darling Range Sports College have won the Simply Energy Cup Cable Division for the fourth time in seven years, defeating local rivals Governor Stirling Senior High School by 27 points in the Grand Final on Wednesday, 16th of September, at UWA Sports Park. Darling Range burst out of the blocks early, kicking five goals straight in no time, making full use of the strong breeze heading to the northern end.  They went into the half time break with a solid lead; 6.0.36 to 1.3.9.  Governor Stirling fought back manfully in the second half as their ball movement improved through the middle of the ground, managing to outscore their opponents for the half.  In the end though, an accurate Darling Range came out on top: 9.0.54 to 4.3.27. Optus WAFL Semi Finals Wrap

Sunday, September 20, 2020 - 10:46 PM - by Chris Pike
CLAREMONT is the first team through to the 2020 Optus WAFL Grand Final after a stunning win over South Fremantle on Sunday while West Perth ended the fairytale finals return of Perth in some wild Joondalup weather. The WAFL finals series for 2020 got underway on Sunday afternoon with the two semi finals and to say there was a different look to it without this century's dominant team Subiaco and with Perth there for the first time since 1997 would be a great understatement. Perth had captured the imagination of the West Australian football public after scoring the upset win over South Fremantle the previous Saturday night to book a spot in the finals in 1997. WAFLW Grand Final | Thunder complete remarkable rise

Sunday, September 20, 2020 - 9:27 AM - by Chris Pike
PEEL Thunder's remarkable journey from WAFL Women's wooden spooners to premiers in the space of 12 months is complete after they earned a hard fought Grand Final victory against Subiaco at Provident Financial Oval on Saturday afternoon. The Joondalup venue played host to the WAFLW Grand Final of 2020 featuring a Subiaco team who has finished on top of the ladder in both seasons of the competition and were trying to get rewarded while Peel was looking to keep its dramatic rise. The Thunder won just one game in 2019 to claim the wooden spoon and then they still had to win their final home and away season game in 2020 at home to Claremont to even make the finals. The 2020 Optus WAFL Premiership Season couldn’t have possibly ended in a more dramatic and exciting way than by having East Perth just edge ahead of Subiaco in the race for fourth spot last Saturday afternoon before Perth completed its fairytale return to finals later that evening. The Demons have not played in a WAFL final since losing the 1997 preliminary final to South Fremantle at Subiaco Oval but they return to post-season action this Sunday afternoon. Read More ...

Demons aren’t done yet after releasing pressure valve

Friday, September 18, 2020 - 3:02 PM - by Chris Pike
WITH the burden of ending Perth's finals drought now lifted, Demons coach Earl Spalding sees no reason why his group can't aim to go all the way over the next three weeks and end a wait more than double as long for the club. It has been the run of outs that has just naturally been accruing ever since 1997 with the Demons not playing finals football in the WAFL. Not only have Perth not played a final since losing the 1997 preliminary final to South Fremantle at Subiaco Oval by 37 points, but the reality is they have rarely even given themselves a chance to be in the hunt over the past 22 years. Abby continuing Barnden family legacy at Thunder

Friday, September 18, 2020 - 11:06 AM - by Chris Pike
THE Barnden family has been synonymous with the Peel Thunder Football Club for more than 20 years and now star player Abby has the chance to be part of history on Saturday if she can lead her team to a WAFL Women's premiership. Wayne Barnden joined Peel Thunder for its second WAFL season in 1998 on the back of his 62-game playing career at East Fremantle prior to that and he went on to play another 76 matches with the Mandurah-based club. The Barnden family has remained closely linked with Peel ever since and Paula now works full-time at the club as sponsorship and marketing manager so to say the Thunder means a lot and is a big part in the lives of the Barnden family would be quite the understatement. Redemption so close now for the Lions

Friday, September 18, 2020 - 10:59 AM - by Chris Pike
SUBIACO has had to stew over last year's disappointing finals exit for a long time to try and get redemption in the 2020 Optus WAFL Women's Premiership Season and now the chance presents in Saturday's Grand Final. Subiaco had a tremendous home and away season in the first ever WAFL Women's campaign in 2019 to finish on top of the ladder and earn the inaugural minor premiership for the competition that was initially made up of the Lions, East Fremantle, Swan Districts, Claremont and Peel Thunder. The Lions put themselves in prime position to have a real crack at making history and winning the first ever WAFLW premiership by finishing in that first place, but it wasn’t to be. Read More ...

Griffin, McGinnity, Payne all retire from WAFL

Friday, September 18, 2020 - 6:20 AM - by Chris Pike
THE WAFL seasons came to an end for East Fremantle, Swan Districts and East Perth on the weekend, and so did the decorated playing careers of Jonathon Griffin, Steven Payne and Patrick McGinnity. The careers of the trio were all remarkable and by the time they played their last games after Round 9 on Sunday afternoon, they had combined to produce 190 AFL appearances while playing 370 WAFL games for a premiership, four Grand Final appearances and a pair of fairest and best awards. Each of them will leave a significant hole at their clubs in 2021 with Griffin still East Fremantle's captain and No. 1 ruckman with McGinnity also East Perth's sole captain for the first time in 2020 while Payne remained a tremendously consistent and hard-running wingman for Swan Districts. Wednesday, September 16, 2020 - 9:05 PM - by Chris Pike
THE WAFL season could not have possibly finished in more dramatic or emotional fashion with Perth beating South Fremantle to secure their first finals appearance since 1997, and the battles for spots in the last Team of the Round for the season was hot as well. It was a simply remarkable finish to the 2020 Optus WAFL Premiership Season with the way things panned out on Saturday afternoon and evening.
