Optus WAFL Semi Finals Wrap

Sunday, September 8, 2019 - 11:58 PM - by Chris Pike
SUBIACO is the first team through to the WAFL Grand Final for 2019 after beating South Fremantle in Sunday's second semi-final thanks to a third quarter burst while Claremont has stayed alive eliminating the West Coast Eagles. Both semi finals took place on Sunday afternoon to continue the 2019 Optus WAFL Finals Series after the opening weekend saw the West Coast Eagles eliminate West Perth in a thriller and South Fremantle overcome Claremont. That saw South Fremantle set up a second semi-final clash with minor premiers Subiaco and little separated the two teams most of the afternoon on Sunday at Leederville Oval. Read More ...

Optus WAFLW Preliminary Final Wrap

Sunday, September 8, 2019 - 12:46 PM - by Chris Pike
SWAN Districts has continued its tremendous late season form to storm into the WAFL Women's Grand Final against East Fremantle with an emphatic 45-point preliminary final win against Subiaco on Saturday. Subiaco had been the standout team for much of the first ever Optus WAFLW Premiership season and did finish as minor premiers, but they lost the second semi-final to East Fremantle leaving them in a must-win situation on Saturday to keep their 2019 campaign alive. The Lions had earned hosting rights for the preliminary final on Saturday afternoon as they took on Swans at Leederville Oval, but it was the black-and-whites who came into the game with the momentum on the back of a four-match winning streak. Lim backs attacking Tigers to get on a roll

Sunday, September 8, 2019 - 9:19 AM - by Chris Pike
RYAN Lim has set himself for a bounce back game in Sunday's first semi-final against the West Coast Eagles and he remains confident of how far Claremont can still go in 2019 provided they play attacking football. Claremont fell 39 points behind during the third quarter of last Saturday's qualifying final against South Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.  But when the Tigers threw caution to the wind and started to play more attacking football, the goals began to flow and they ended up only losing by seven points to the Bulldogs. Kitchin's hunger burning as strong as ever

Sunday, September 8, 2019 - 7:53 AM - by Chris Pike
LEIGH Kitchin's first five WAFL seasons with Subiaco could have hardly gone better but now he enters his first finals campaign as captain at the Lions and for the prolific midfielder, it's all about keeping to plan but ensure the hunger doesn’t dissipate.  Kitchin arrived at Subiaco in 2015 from VFL club Frankston as a virtual like for like replacement for the previous year's Grand Final Simpson Medal winner Jason Bristow who moved into retirement – and has since returned as assistant coach. Not only did Kitchin come in and slot into that midfield role seamlessly from the start of the 2015 season, but he has become an outstanding servant of the Lions over the course of what is now a 104-game WAFL career. WAFL Milestone | Jason Maskos 100 Games

Saturday, September 7, 2019 - 5:59 PM - by Chris Pike
HAVING already tasted colts and reserves premiership success at South Fremantle, Jason Maskos desperately wants to breakthrough at league level with the Bulldogs as he prepares for his 100th game. Following on from the footsteps of his father Arthur who played 90 games for South Fremantle between 1985 and 1992, and then would go on to coach his son in colts and be a league assistant, Jason always seemed destined to play with the Bulldogs. He always felt like achievements like reaching 100 games was a faraway dream, but he reaches the century mark this Sunday as South Fremantle take on Subiaco in the second semi-final at Leederville Oval with a spot in the 2019 WAFL Grand Final on the line. Grey ready to keep leading Eagles from front

Saturday, September 7, 2019 - 12:27 PM - by Chris Pike
WHEN putting together a WAFL team, the West Coast Eagles wanted the experience and leadership of Brady Grey and he continues to pay that off in spades while knowing helping lead team success could help him back into the AFL. It was somewhat a surprise when Grey found himself delisted by the Fremantle Dockers at the end of 2018 having played 21 AFL matches in the previous four years. He had certainly shown along the way he belonged in the AFL, particularly during 2017, and when back in the WAFL with Peel Thunder he produced some outstanding performances. Read More ...

THE Finals in the Simply Energy Colts got underway on the weekend with Claremont advancing to within one more win of a Grand Final appearance while East Perth ended the season of Swan Districts. The colts finals series got underway on Saturday morning and it was the minor premier Peel Thunder who got to sit back and let the other four finals teams do battle as they awaited to find out their opponent in the second semi-final next Sunday morning. It was the elimination final that got things underway at Fremantle Community Bank Oval and East Perth proved too strong for a Swan Districts team that made the Grand Final in 2018. The Royals won 8.5 (53) to 4.5 (29) to keep their season alive and knock out the black-and-whites. Read More ...
