Margetts reaches 450 game milestone

Round 1, 1999. East Fremantle and South Fremantle kicked off the season with a typically spiteful Fremantle Derby. Current Perth coach Earl Spalding led out the Sharks, while Peter Worsfold captained the Bulldogs. While this seemed like a fairly standard game of WAFL, it became a special moment for a 23-year-old Dean Margetts. The up-and-coming WAFL umpire was adjudicating his first game of league footy. 20 years and 18 seasons later, and that same aspiring umpire will walk onto the SCG in his 450th senior WAFL/AFL game. “I was as nervous as anything,” Margetts reminisced of the 99’ derby. Round 11 Optus WAFLW Preview

THE WAFL Women's competition resumes this weekend for Round 11 action with Swan Districts attempting to back up its win a fortnight ago against Subiaco with East Fremantle also playing Peel Thunder. The WAFLW season took a break last week for the State Game that took place at Steel Blue Oval last Saturday with Queensland defeating the WAFL Women's State Team by 26 points. Round 16 Optus WAFL Preview

THERE might be just the three games in Round 16 of the WAFL season but all of them have plenty at stake including a fascinating Subiaco battle with the West Coast Eagles and then top four teams Claremont and Perth locking horns. Coming off a fascinating Round 15 of the 2019 Optus WAFL Premiership Season which might have only featured two games but it saw West Perth and Peel Thunder score important wins to leapfrog the West Coast Eagles on the ladder. Now in Round 16, the four teams that played last week, West Perth, Peel Thunder, East Perth and East Fremantle, all take the bye while the other six teams lock horns which includes the competition's top four teams, another trying to return to fifth spot and then the cellar dwellers. Three WA players named in AFLW All-Australian side

Three of Western Australia's AFLW U18s have been named in the All-Australian side announced by the AFL. Roxanne Roux, pictured, was selected in the forward line, Mikayla Bowen in the mid-field and Mim Strom on the interchange. 2019 Footy Writing Competition

The annual WAFC Footy Writing Competition was held in Term One and sparked tremendous interest in schools across Western Australia. THERE might have been just the two matches in Round 15 of the WAFL season but with all four teams trying to stay in the final hunt, it proved a season-defining one with wins in the finish for Peel Thunder and West Perth. The four teams who were in action as part of Round 15 of the 2019 Optus WAFL Premiership Season all still had hopes of breaking into the top five so there was plenty at stake in the two match ups on Saturday afternoon. Round 15 Colts Wrap

THE 2019 WAFL Colts season significantly tightened up on Saturday with Peel Thunder's six-game winning run coming to an end while Claremont continued its charge with a big win in Albany while East Perth closed in on third position as well. There were three games that took place in the WAFL Colts competition on Saturday and each of them had a significant impact on positions inside the top five as the race for finals positions heats up. WAFLW State Team fight to the finish against Queensland

The WAFL Women's State Team was defeated by 26 points by a talent-laden Queensland team in a hard-fought contest at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday, July 20. The WAFLW team took an early lead with Emily McGuire kicking her first of two goals for the afternoon. Queensland, which had 14 AFLW listed players from the Gold Coast Suns Academy, hit back in the second and third quarters before stretching their lead in the fourth to run out winners 6.10 (46) to 3.2 (20). THERE were just the two games in Round 15 of the WAFL on Saturday but it proved to be two crucial victories for West Perth and Peel Thunder as they continue to battle over a finals position in 2019. With the top five teams on the ladder Subiaco, Claremont, South Fremantle, Perth and the West Coast Eagles all having a bye in Round 15 along with the bottom place Swan Districts, it was a chance for four of the teams all locked in a fight over fifth position to lock horns. WAFL Milestone | Shane Nelson 150 Games

IT is tough to think of a better or more consistent WAFL player over the last decade than West Perth's triple fairest and best winner Shane Nelson and while he is proud to earn life membership at the Falcons, the drive to win a second premiership trumps everything. He has never been the biggest, strongest, fastest or most skilful out on any WAFL field he has graced, but Nelson could very claim to be the best as West Perth prepares to celebrate his 150th appearance with the Falcons this Saturday in a must-win derby against East Perth at HBF Arena. Ever since he made his league debut back in Round 7. 2012, Nelson has never looked back and it was a career that came on the back of always dreaming of playing for West Perth, coming through the development squad and colts ranks, and then banging down the door for a crack at league level. Round 15 Optus WAFL Preview

THERE are just the two matches in Round 15 of the WAFL but both matches feature four of the teams trying to keep their seasons alive in the race for fifth position. The top four spots at the of Round 14 do appear relatively locked away with Subiaco three games and percentage clear in first position while Claremont is a further game and percentage in front of both South Fremantle and Perth who sit on 8-5 records.
