WAFL top draft prospects star in State Combine

2018 Subiaco Colts Premiership player Wil Hickmott and Next Generation Academy player Jason Carter were among the players to impress at this year’s NAB AFL State Draft Combine on Sunday, October 14. Hickmott recorded top results in the 20 metre Sprint,  Agility test and Yo-Yo test, while Carter finished on top in the Vertical Jump and Running Vertical Jump and also impressed in the 20m Sprint. Howlett, Pearce share Peel's Tuckey Medal

THE returning Ben Howlett and out of favour AFL veteran Danyle Pearce both did all they could to try and get Peel Thunder back into the finals in 2018 and were rewarded by sharing the Tuckey Medal as fairest and best winners. On the back of playing in the club's first three ever finals series and winning the past two WAFL premierships, Peel wasn’t quite able to back it up and reach the finals again in 2018. All-time great Horsley claims third Outridge Medal

KYAL Horsley has further established himself as one of the all-time greats of Subiaco by winning the Outridge Medal to give him three fairest and best awards just weeks after being premiership captain once more and winning the Simpson Medal. Horsley might have been considered unlucky by many to miss out on winning the Sandover Medal given his 2018 season was likely the best and most consistent of his remarkable career, but in the end what he has walked away from the year with establishes his legacy further. There were no shortage of tremendous candidates for the Outridge Medal in 2018 given the dominant and unbeaten season that Subiaco had with a whole host of star performers, but it was Horsley who led the way. Players gear up for AFL State Combine

Twenty-one WAFL players will undergo testing at the 2018 AFL State Draft Combine this Sunday. The WA invites include 11 WA State Academy players including Regan Spooner, Ethan Hansen and Luke Moore who were all standouts in the 2018 NAB AFL National 18s Championship Series earlier this year. Players will undergo body composition testing and then take part in speed, agility, power and endurance tests. Following the tests, players will then speak with AFL Club representatives. Unforgettable experience at the ‘G for WA junior umpire

Junior umpire Kynan Davies became the envy of all junior umpires across the nation when he, along with six other junior umpires, was selected by the AFL to officiate the half-time Auskick games at the 2018 AFL Grand Final. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the 16 year-old Peel football district umpire who got to run out onto the hallowed turf of the MCG in front of a crowd of more than 100,000. “The atmosphere at the MCG was amazing and I made so many new umpiring friends from different states,” he said. Nightfields kicks off for final term of school

The final term of school is now underway and that means the WA Football Commission’s (WAFC) Nightfields footy program is set to kick off this month. Nightfields is an AFL-based program delivered to kids and youth between the ages of 6 and 18 at more than 20 targeted locations across WA. The after school footy program was developed by the WAFC and is run in partnership with WA Police, various Local Governments, and Shires as well as a broad range of local service providers and state sporting associations. Footy first for Sikh community

More than 100 Sikhs stepped out onto the footy field to learn the fundamentals of our great game as part of the first ever Sikh Community football clinics run by the WA Football Commission. Kids of all ages and their parents took part in two four-week programs over August and September, which were made up of basic football clinics that tapped into various aspects of AFL both on and off the field. West Coast Eagles reserves team endorsed

The West Coast Eagles will field a stand-alone team in the West Australian Football League in 2019 following unanimous endorsement by the WAFL Council of Presidents tonight, Wednesday, October 10. West Australian Football Commission CEO Gavin Taylor said the proposal had been endorsed to support the growth and development of West Coast’s AFL-listed players within a quality State League competition whilst also providing an improved financial return to the WAFL clubs. “This decision represents a significant milestone in the history of the WAFL, with the WAFL clubs embracing the opportunities this will create for the Clubs and competition. East Perth Football Club has been preparing for its return to a standalone club since deciding earlier this year to finalise its partnership with the West Coast Eagles. These preparations have included seeking a head coach to lead East Perth Football Club beyond its partnership with the West Coast Eagles, as early as the 2019 season. In anticipation of the final decision of the WA Football Commission relating to a tenth team in the WAFL competition, East Perth Football Club has announced that 3-time Premiership Captain Jeremy Barnard will coach East Perth for the next three seasons. Midfield move rewarded with Hughes Medal

MARLION Pickett's standout WAFL season for South Fremantle in the midfield was recognised with his winning of the WJ Hughes Medal for 2018 on a night when the Bulldogs farewelled three tremendous servants. South Fremantle finished the 2018 season for the third straight year in the preliminary final and gathered to celebrate the achievements of the campaign on Friday night at the Esplanade Hotel Fremantle by Rydges. There was a lot to celebrate on the night for the Bulldogs with the league team finishing in second position at the end of the home and away season and reaching the preliminary final, the reserves narrowly missing the finals, the colts also finishing fifth and reaching the elimination final. Notte cements legacy with second Swan Medal

TONY Notte cemented his legacy as a great of the Swan Districts Football Club by winning his second Swan Medal during a memorable night celebrating the 2018 season at the picturesque Mandoon Estate on Friday night. Over 200 club supporters were on hand at Mandoon Estate in the Swan Valley on Friday to witness the medal counts for the colts, reserves and league teams at Swan Districts for the 2018 season culminating in Tony Notte winning his second Swan Medal. It was a tremendous night celebrating the 2018 season that saw two of the three grades at Swan Districts reaching the finals with the reserves reaching a first semi-final against Claremont while the colts had a stirring run all the way to the Grand Final, falling just two points short of a stunning premiership. Simply Energy Talent Carnival results

Students unite in special NAIDOC footy project

The entire Year Six student group at Gwynne Park Primary School participated in the school’s biggest ever NAIDOC footy project this year. More than 45 students produced their very own dot painting designs on footballs provided by the WA Football Commission (WAFC). Monaghan appointed as Sharks coach

The East Fremantle Football Club has announced Bill Monaghan as its new Senior Coach for the next three seasons. Monaghan has an extensive background in WA Football, playing over 200 League games with Subiaco and Peel Thunder, followed by an 18-year coaching career with Subiaco and West Perth, culminating in three premierships in League & Reserves at both clubs.
