The West Australian Football Commission (WAFC) was recognised at the 2018 Sport and Recreation Industry Awards this morning for its Aboriginal Sports Weekend, run in partnership with Netball WA.   The annual Aboriginal Sports Weekend, which encompasses the Nicky Winmar Cup, the Kirby Bentley Cup and the Aboriginal Youth Netball Gala Day, was announced as the Community Event of the Year at this morning’s (August 8) award presentation. WEST Perth kept its hopes alive of reaching the finals in the WAFL Colts for 2018 with a win over South Fremantle on Saturday while top two teams Subiaco and Peel Thunder also kept their winning ways going. There were just the three matches in Round 18 of the colts on Saturday starting off with solid wins for Subiaco and Peel Thunder respectively as they go another step towards securing those top two positions while West Perth then moved to being just percentage out of fifth position. SOUTH Fremantle and West Perth put on a terrific show in Round 18 of the WAFL on Saturday with the Bulldogs winning a thriller while Subiaco were too strong for Swan Districts and Peel Thunder enhanced its finals hopes beating East Perth. There were just the three matches in the WAFL in Round 18 action on Saturday and it all began on a big day at Fremantle Community Bank Oval between the third placed South Fremantle and second placed West Perth. Both teams celebrated the 200-game milestones of premiership players and life members Ashton Hams and Chris Keunen respectively too, and in the end it was Hams' South Fremantle who won a tight affair 10.8 (68) to 10.3 (63) against Keunen's West Perth. HE will go down as one of South Fremantle's all-time most decorated players but all Ashton Hams is focused on now is his family and running out with his daughter for his 200th game before trying to end his career with a third WAFL premiership at the Bulldogs. Hams made his South Fremantle league debut way back in 2004 and it has been a remarkable journey ever since with him racking up 199 WAFL games at the Bulldogs heading into Saturday's clash with West Perth at Fremantle Community Bank Oval. Along the way, he has played in the 2005 and 2009 premierships alongside twin brother Kyle while winning the Simpson Medal as best afield in the 2009 Grand Final win against Subiaco.  Read More ...

NOTHING West Perth ruckman Chris Keunen has earned over his 200-game WAFL career has come easy, and someone with less strength of character or maybe a less motivating wife, might have given up along the way but that only makes the milestone all the more meaningful now. Keunen arrived as a tall, athletic and mobile ruckman from Victoria to West Perth ahead of the 2006 WAFL season initially on the recruiting of coach Darren Harris, who soon made way for Todd Curley ahead of that 2006 season to join the West Coast Eagles. Immediately Keunen appeared to have all the tools to be a premier ruckman in the WAFL, but those early years were marred by him being stuck behind the likes of Robert Warnock, Mark Seaby and even at times Mitch Andrews in the pecking order. THERE are just the three matches in Round 18 of the WAFL on Saturday afternoon but each of them have plenty at stake for the teams involved highlighted for the battle for second spot between South Fremantle and West Perth. It is Round 18 of the WAFL to open the final month of the 2018 season and with eight teams still in finals contention every match takes on greater significance. Subiaco might be guaranteed of the minor premiership for a fourth straight season currently undefeated in 2018 after 14 games and East Fremantle is stuck in bottom place at 2-13 having lost seven in-a-row, the other positions all remain up for grabs. It will be a nervous wait for the fourth placed Perth and sixth placed Claremont who can do nothing to advance their finals prospects due to a bye on Saturday, but East Perth, Peel Thunder and Swan Districts all try to help their respective causes. Corrigin Auskicker Drew Hall was the envy of all Auskickers last weekend when he was announced the eighteenth weekly nominee for the 2018 NAB AFL Auskicker of the Year competition at the Round 19 AFL clash between Essendon and the Sydney Swans. The 11-year-old Geelong fan said he enjoyed every minute of his experience at the Friday night game at Etihad Stadium, especially his interview with Seven Sport’s Hamish McLachlan. “It was so exciting being at the game and I really enjoyed being interviewed by Hamish,” he said. GIVEN just 12 months ago he was playing in Harvey, it's a remarkable journey just for Patrick Italiano to be playing league football at Swan Districts but he had such an impact in Saturday's crucial win against East Fremantle that he was named M & J Chickens Player of the Round. Italiano did play a couple of colts matches at Swan Districts last year but most of his time was spent at the Harvey Bulls in the South West Football League and certainly there was never any guarantee he would end up playing WAFL league football. But the now 19-year-old did come up and play a reserves game for Swan Districts in Round 2 but he didn’t make another appearance until Round 10 when he played against Claremont at Claremont Oval. SUBIACO and East Perth recorded heart-stopping Round 17 WAFL victories with West Perth and Swan Districts recording important wins too with a host of standout out individual performances right across the league. It was an important round of WAFL action and Claremont took it up to Subiaco the most any team has in 2018, but ultimately the Tigers came up short and it could cost them a finals berth while the Royals replaced them in the top five with an after the siren goal.
