Spalding looks for Demons to continue impressive momentum

Saturday, June 23, 2018 - 6:51 AM - by Chris Pike
IMPROVED confidence, health and belief are all factors in Perth now playing its best football in Earl Spalding's time as coach and he sees no reason now why they can't further close in on a top five position by ending a horror run against West Perth. Perth hasn’t won a premiership in the WAFL since 1977 nor taken part in a final series since 1997, and really they haven’t seriously threatened to accomplish either for a long time, including since Spalding took over as coach in 2015 from Damien McMahon. It has been tough going the previous three years and something Spalding certainly hadn’t been used to after his playing career both in the WAFL at Perth and East Fremantle, and VFL/AFL with Melbourne and Carlton. TABtouch Team of Round 11

Wednesday, June 20, 2018 - 10:59 AM - by Chris Pike
A COUPLE of exciting Perth forwards combined for 12 goals, the reigning Sandover Medallist was on fire, a versatile Subiaco big man continued to dominate and a West Perth veteran made it 13 goals in his last two games as just some of the standout Round 11 WAFL performers. There were plenty of outstanding individual performers on Saturday in Round 11 of the 2018 WAFL season with wins along the way for the top three teams Subiaco, South Fremantle and West Perth, and a Perth side who put themselves right in the finals hunt. The thriller of the afternoon took place at Claremont Oval with West Perth beating Claremont 9.8 (62) to 8.13 (61) with Andrew Strijk booting another five goals for the Falcons. Read More ...

M & J Chickens Player of Round 11

Wednesday, June 20, 2018 - 10:50 AM - by Chris Pike
HIS WAFL debut might have come at the advanced age of 24, but Michael Bennell has already made up for lost time and on Saturday he delivered a stunning seven-goal performance for Perth to earn M & J Chickens Player of the Round honours. Bennell did play a handful of games for Swan Districts' reserves back in 2013, but he has spent recent years in Albany and playing in the WAFL did appear a faraway thought for most of that time. He did play some impressive football in the forward-line for the Albany Sharks, but still he was settled down south and as he approached his 24th birthday, a career in the WAFL was beginning to appear unlikely. Round 11 Colts Wrap

Tuesday, June 19, 2018 - 11:43 PM - by Chris Pike
DESPITE Round 11 WAFL Colts victories for Peel Thunder, Subiaco and East Fremantle couldn’t topple Swan Districts from top spot while Claremont won a nail-biter over West Perth. The Round 11 WAFL Colts action saw Claremont claim a thriller beating West Perth 7.9 (51) to 7.7 (49) at Claremont Oval. The other three games weren’t quite as tight with Subiaco beating East Perth 11.21 (87) to 6.4 (40) at Leederville Oval, Peel Thunder defeating South Fremantle 11.10 (76) to 6.6 (42) at Fremantle Community Bank Oval and East Fremantle downing Perth 14.9 (93) to 10.5 (65) at Lathlain Park. Round 11 Match Report – Perth v East Fremantle

Tuesday, June 19, 2018 - 9:12 AM - by Chris Pike
PERTH emphasised how much it has improved over the past 12 months in comparison to East Fremantle with the Demons getting closer to a first finals appearance since 1997 with a 64-point win at Lathlain Park on Saturday.   Perth and East Fremantle were the bottom two WAFL teams last year winning just three games apiece and while they both occupied the same spots at the foot of the ladder entering Saturday's clash at Lathlain Park, the gulf between both clubs was on show.   The Demons came into the game on the back of beating South Fremantle by a goal the previous Saturday and that was the same Bulldogs team that had thumped East Fremantle by 73 points five days earlier. Round 11 Match Report – South Fremantle v Peel Thunder

Tuesday, June 19, 2018 - 8:50 AM - by Chris Pike
SOUTH Fremantle did well to bounce back from a surprise loss to Perth overcoming the absence of three of its leading goalkickers from 2017 to lead Peel Thunder by as much as 55 points and win by 35 at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday.   South Fremantle and Peel were meeting for the first time in 2018 on Saturday at Fremantle Community Bank Oval and having met in each of the past two WAFL finals series, they are two teams that have built up a bit of a rivalry in recent times.   The Bulldogs also needed to bounce back from lost two of their previous three matches against Claremont and Perth with a big WA Day Foundation Derby win thrown in there over East Fremantle. Round 11 Match Report – East Perth v Subiaco

Tuesday, June 19, 2018 - 8:22 AM - by Chris Pike
THE final margin was exactly 100 points less than their meeting on Good Friday but again Subiaco did enough to remain unbeaten in the 2018 WAFL season beating East Perth by 18 points at Leederville Oval on Saturday.   Subiaco ended up continuing its dominance of the WAFL this season and of East Perth in recent seasons, but the Lions didn’t have it all their own way on Saturday in the battle of the Leederville Oval co-tenants.   While Subiaco did end up winning 11.15 (81) to 9.9 (63) to make it nine straight wins to remain undefeated this season and 10 in-a-row against East Perth, the Royals got closer than any other opponent to the Lions so far in 2018. Round 11 Match Report – Claremont v West Perth

Tuesday, June 19, 2018 - 8:07 AM - by Chris Pike
CLAREMONT and West Perth games have been delivering remarkable contests for years and it continued Saturday with the Falcons beating the Tigers by a point thanks to ruckman Chris Keunen touching what would have been the winning goal right on the line in the dying seconds.   The recent history between the two clubs was remarkable already entering Saturday's clash at Claremont Oval and it certainly continued.   West Perth had won six of the previous seven meetings with Claremont but four of those had only been by a combined 13 points and ever since the Tigers beat the Falcons by 119 points in Round 18, 2012, every game between the two teams had been decided by 10.6 points. WA State 16s sock it to sarcoma

Monday, June 18, 2018 - 9:25 AM
The WA State 16s team donned odd socks during their trial match against the WA Amateur Football League State Colts at Subiaco Oval last Firday night to raise awareness and funds for sarcoma research. This initiative was part of a wider football community effort between the West Perth, Claremont and Subiaco football districts. Last year the football community managed to raise more than $100,000 which bumped the total amount of money raised over the last four years to more than $30 million. Read More ...
