Cornes leads SANFL with pride in jumper at forefront

Friday, May 22, 2015 - 12:11 AM - by Chris Pike
SOUTH Australian football legend Graham Cornes feels a great affinity with Western Australia in their combined disdain for Victorian football, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t out to prove the SANFL's superiority in Saturday's State match against the WAFL on a massive weekend for his family. Cornes has been inducted into both the Australian and South Australian Football Hall of Fames, and the fact that he is coaching the SANFL team into Saturday's State game with the WAFL at Lathlain Park illustrates how seriously it is being taken. On top of everything Cornes achieved in his 369-game playing career with Glenelg, North Melbourne and South Adelaide, and in 284 matches as coach of South Adelaide, Glenelg and the Adelaide Crows, representing South Australia as a player and coach has always meant the world to him. Leading WA reignites coaching flame for Harris

Thursday, May 21, 2015 - 9:28 PM - by Chris Pike
HE IS a WAFL premiership captain and coach, AFL premiership assistant coach and an innovator in the Leading Teams program, but being in charge of Western Australia against South Australia in Saturday's State game has whetted Darren Harris' coaching appetite again. Harris arrived at West Perth in the early 1990s and went on to become a premiership captain in 1995, then coached the Falcons to the flag in 2003 and was a premiership assistant coach with West Coast in 2006 before spending time as a development coach with Carlton. He has now been back in Perth for a couple of years working with the Leading Teams program and that hasn’t allowed him too much time to consider a return to full-time coaching despite several WAFL clubs having made serious approaches to him. Tuesday, May 19, 2015 - 3:12 PM - by Chris Pike
TALLAN Ames' withdrawal from the WAFL squad opens the door for five-time premiership full-back Darren Rumble to again represent Western Australia while the Swan Districts skipper is desperately hoping a premiership teammate of his gets selected. Ames has been forced to withdraw from the WAFL squad that will take on the SANFL this Saturday at Lathlain Park meaning the 31-year-old veteran of 219 matches won't get to add to his four previous matches for WA, and also potentially misses out on the chance to captain his State. That opens the door for another veteran full-back with Subiaco's five-time premiership player Rumble called into the WA squad and now likely to play in the absence of Ames. Read More ...

Ins & Outs - Carlton Draught WAFL Squad

Thursday, May 14, 2015 - 2:57 PM - by Steve Tuohey
VERSATILE Subiaco player and Simpson Medallist during WA's historic win over Victoria in 2013, Wayde Twomey, has been added to the Black Swans squad ahead of next Saturday's State Game against the SANFL at 2.15pm at Lathlain Park. Twomey joined the squad on the training track this week as they geared up for the May 23 clash, his five-goal haul during WA's 17-point win over the VFL two years ago, no doubt a factor in the minds of WA selectors.  Claremont ruckman Mark Seaby was also invited to training on Monday night but was unavailable, citing a lack of match time since his return from a hamstring injury a fortnight ago. Fully fit Ames ready to fire Swans against Lions

Thursday, May 14, 2015 - 1:00 PM - by Chris Pike
SWAN Districts captain Tallan Ames has escaped a hamstring injury and now is preparing himself and his team to topple the league-leading reigning premiers Subiaco this Saturday with some old premiership teammates of his in his sights as well. Ames had an injury scare with a tight hamstring during Saturday's loss to Claremont in Mt Barker, but has pulled up fine from that this week with scans giving him all the clear. And that is a double dose of good news for the 218-game full-back who will now be available to take on Subiaco this Saturday at Medibank Stadium and then also being available to play for Western Australia against South Australia in next Saturday's State game at Lathlain Park.
