Monaghan knows WAFL must be at best to beat NEAFL

WAFL State coach Bill Monaghan is happy with his team's preparation to face the NEAFL on Saturday at Blacktown in Sydney, is happy with the side picked and is now just looking forward to trying to lead Western Australia to a victory. After leading West Perth to the WAFL premiership last year, Monaghan has the honour of coaching the WAFL State team this year up against a team from the NEAFL which features players from clubs in NSW, the ACT, Queensland and the Northern Territory. The game will be held at Blacktown in Sydney and bouncedown will be at 12pm local time, and 10am WA time. The game will be broadcast on a live stream via the NEAFL website – www.neafl.com.au. Arena Joondalup redevelopment planning well underway

PLANNING and progress on the Arena Joondalup redevelopment is well and truly underway with the Project Definition Plan to be signed off by May 13, the Project Scope and Project Delivery Method determined by June 30, building to commence by the end of 2014 and the entire project done before the end of 2016. The entire $20 million project will eventually end up seeing new facilities being built for the West Perth Football Club overlooking the Arena Joondalup football field while a new basketball stadium will be built for the Joondalup Wolves and upgrades to the Joondalup Brothers Rugby Union facilities will also be undertaken. Multicultural Gala Day a great success

The West Australian Football Commission hosted an AFL Multicultural Gala Day on Monday, May 19 with special guests from the West Coast Eagles including AFL Multicultural Ambassador Nic Naitanui. Peel coach wishes Jones had chance for career highlight

PEEL Thunder coach Cam Shepherd is delighted that Brendon Jones has played on again in 2014 and he has continued the outstanding form he has shown his entire career, but is disappointed he hasn’t been offered a chance for what would be the highlight of his career. THE West Australian Football League has announced its leadership group and changes to the initial State Squad for this weekend’s State game against the North East Australian Football League in Sydney. East Perth’s Brendan Lee has been appointed as captain and Tallan Ames (Swan Districts) and Paul Bevan (Perth) as vice captains. West Perth’s Nicholas Rodda has been added to the squad. EAST Perth co-captain Brendan Lee has not only been added to the WAFL's squad to face the NEAFL this Saturday in Sydney, but he has been named captain with Swan Districts' full-back Tallan Ames and Perth utility Paul Bevan his vice-captains. Lee was not included in the original squad having missed the first six games of the 2014 season with a nasty finger injury that required surgery, but his performances in his first two games back saw him suddenly rocket into contention. SWAN Districts has replaced Subiaco on top of the WAFL, Peel Thunder has its first win in almost 12 months, the reigning premiers West Perth are back on track and East Fremantle got back to winning after Round 9 action heading into the State game break. Swan Districts won its seventh straight match to now sit clear on top of the WAFL after a 11.17 (83) to 8.9 (57) win over Claremont at Bassendean's Steel Blue Oval on Saturday. Peel Thunder got its first win since Round 10 last year beating South Fremantle 11.13 (79) to 7.13 (55) at Mandurah's Bendigo Bank Stadium while West Perth downed Subiaco 14.12 (96) to 13.8 (86) at Leederville's Medibank Stadium and East Fremantle defeated Perth 13.12 (90) to 12.9 (81) at Lathlain Park. Shark Stephen's 100 games down to hard work, dedication

ANDREW Stephen served a long apprenticeship but has turned himself into a favourite of East Fremantle and now will bring up his 100th WAFL match this Saturday to add to a career already including two state appearances and a Lynn Medal. Stephen grew up the son of 1969 Lynn Medallist Peter and began playing colts with the Sharks in 2005, then served more than 50 games of an apprenticeship in the reserves before finally cementing a spot in the league team by 2010 having played 11 matches the previous two seasons. Lee hits the ground flying after injury-hit start to 2014

EAST Perth co-captain Brendan Lee missed the first six games of 2014 but has been superb the past fortnight in two just about best on ground performances to put him right in the mix to play in the WAFL team against the NEAFL next Saturday. Both before and after spending 2012 with Essendon in the AFL, Lee has likely cemented himself as the best midfielder in the WAFL. Having won the East Perth fairest and best in 2011, the Bendigo Bombers best and fairest in 2012 and then again the Royals' fairest and best last year, Lee has been consistent over a long period now but he suffered a hiccup on the eve of 2014 when he injured a finger and required surgery.
