SWAN Districts was the best team in the WAFL colts all season and prevailed over Claremont in the grand final on Sunday morning at Patersons Stadium by 20 points, but the Tigers made them work for it. Swans lost just two matches all season and then advanced straight to the grand final with a thrilling second semi-final win over Claremont before the Tigers advanced to the decider with a one-point nail-biting victory over South Fremantle in the preliminary final. EAST Perth and Subiaco have shared a home ground for more than a decade now but will face off in a grand final for the first time since 1959 with the Royals and Lions set for a strong battle between the two standout teams of 2014. Either side retains the right to make a late change and that remains a possibility especially with the storms predicted for Sunday so it wouldn’t be a huge surprise, but right now East Perth will go into the grand final with the same 22 that won the second semi-final against Subiaco by 32 points. SUBIACO is looking to finish off a dominant WAFL reserves season by winning the premiership on Sunday at Patersons Stadium but West Perth is in its second straight grand final and out to break a reserves drought that stretches back to 1960. Subiaco put together a dominant season in the reserves winning 18 of its 20 matches during the home and away season with a five-game and percentage advantage over the rest of the competition. Swan Districts was the standout colts team of 2014 winning 18 of 20 matches during the home and away season, and then beating Claremont in the second semi-final to win straight through to the grand final. DARREN Rumble has the chance to become Subiaco's most successful ever player with a fifth premiership on Sunday and he will have a big job to do on East Perth full-forward Josh Smith to help that cause. Rumble shared the 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008 premierships with Alistair Pickett, Luke Newick, Marc Webb, Chad Cossom and Mark Haynes but is the last remaining player with four flags to his credit at the Lions giving him the chance of the rare feat of a fifth flag if they beat the Royals this Sunday. TRINITY Handley put together one of the more remarkable WAFL careers over the past decade as the ultimate versatile player and the 30-year-old retires content having won two premierships, represented WA and being a life member of the Claremont Football Club. Handley played the final game of his career that began at league level in 2004 in Claremont's Round 23 victory over East Perth in which he kicked three goals including the match-winner on a day when Luke Blackwell, Matt Orzel and Andrew Foster also bid farewell to the WAFL. That meant that Handley ends his career on 189 matches with Claremont including two premierships, five grand finals and 17 finals matches while kicking 101 goals along the way and representing WA in 2012. MUCH of the talk surrounding East Perth this season has been about its partnership with the West Coast Eagles, but it is the Royals' WAFL players who will likely be the deciding factor in winning a premiership on Sunday or not with Dean Cadwallader as important as anyone. Cadwallader has now played 40 matches with East Perth since making his debut in 2010, but his last three against Peel Thunder, Claremont and then the second semi-final against Subiaco could very well have been his best in just about best on ground performances in a new role across half-back. East Perth is coming off losing last year's WAFL grand final to West Perth by 49 points but the Royals have been on top of the ladder through most of 2014 ending the year as minor premiers and then booking a grand final sport with a 32-point second semi-final win over Subiaco at Medibank Stadium. WAYDE Twomey came to Subiaco from Swan Districts in 2014 confident the Lions could be a force and now he is preparing for his third WAFL grand final appearance and couldn’t be more excited about it. The 28-year-old starred in Swan Districts' successful teams between 2008 and 2010 when he first arrived from VFL club with Werribee and in that time Swans lost the 2008 grand final to Subiaco and the 2009 preliminary final to the Lions so seeing Subiaco involved in September is nothing new. Twomey was then part of Swan Districts' stunning one-point grand final win over Claremont in 2010 before he earned a chance in the AFL with Carlton in 2011 and then returned to Swan Districts in 2012 where he was again part of two more finals campaigns while also winning the 2013 Simpson Medal for his five-goal haul in the State game win over Victoria. AARON Black has worked tirelessly to improve constantly throughout his 85-game WAFL career with West Perth and the 21-year-old was rewarded with the 2014 Sandover Medal on Monday night but even he was surprised at the result. Black won the Sandover Medal for 2014 on Monday night polling 47 votes to win by one vote ahead of teammate Shane Nelson and former winner and pre-count favourite Luke Blackwell with Subiaco captain Kyal Horsley finishing on 45 votes and East Fremantle's Bradd Dalziell 43. It was a thrilling vote count but in the end Black won after polling in the final eight games of the season and held on to win with Blackwell not polling a vote in Claremont's Round 23 victory over East Perth where most pundits had him close to best on ground, if not the best afield that day. WEST Perth has its first Sandover Medal winner since 1993 with 21-year-old star Aaron Black winning a thrilling vote count on Monday night with only four votes splitting the top five players. Black might not turn 22 until Christmas Day this year but has already played 85 league matches and now can add a Sandover Medal to the 2013 premiership and a State game appearance for Western Australia in 2013. It was a thrilling Sandover Medal vote count on Monday night at the Grand Ball Room at Crown Perth with Black finishing on 47 votes, but only taking the lead thanks to three votes in the final round while pre-count favourite Luke Blackwell didn’t poll and was left on 46 votes. THE Sandover Medal for 2014 looks to have a host of potential winners with two players in the running to win the WAFL's most prestigious honour for a second time while a band of midfielders fresh off AFL lists sure to be among the top vote getters as well. The 2011 Sandover Medal winner Luke Blackwell and last year's winner Rory O'Brien appear to be two players in the running to take out the award as the WAFL's fairest and best player for the second time, but there isn't a shortage of players that they will be contending with on the night.
