Subiaco prove too tough to win 2014 WAFL premiership

Sunday, September 21, 2014 - 6:56 PM - by Chris Pike
SUBIACO has handled the wet conditions and grand final stage perfectly to hand East Perth a second straight grand final defeat to the tune of 16 points to win the 2014 premiership at Patersons Stadium. Despite East Perth being heavily favoured to win the 2014 premiership coming off losing last year's grand final to West Perth, then winning the minor premiership two games clear on top of the ladder and beating Subiaco in the second semi-final, the Lions had all the answers on Sunday. The wet conditions for the grand final suited the likes of Jason Bristow, Chris Phelan, Kyal Horsley, Chris Deluca and his younger brother Josh ideally, and Subiaco opened up a match-winning lead in the third quarter and won 11.16 (82) to 9.12 (66). West Perth wins 2014 reserves premiership

Sunday, September 21, 2014 - 2:49 PM - by Chris Pike
WEST Perth kicked the only three goals of the final quarter to beat Subiaco by 14 points in the WAFL reserves grand final to end a drought that stretches way back to 1960. The Falcons had not won a reserves premiership since 1960 and lost last year's grand final to South Fremantle, but finished the stronger over the minor premiers Subiaco on Sunday at Patersons Stadium to come away with the victory. Subiaco had finished the season clear on top of the reserves ladder and had a massive percentage while scoring a thumping second semi-final win also over West Perth, but the Falcons finished the better in the wet conditions of the grand final. Swan Districts win 2014 WAFL colts premiership

Sunday, September 21, 2014 - 12:08 PM - by Chris Pike
SWAN Districts was the best team in the WAFL colts all season and prevailed over Claremont in the grand final on Sunday morning at Patersons Stadium by 20 points, but the Tigers made them work for it. Swans lost just two matches all season and then advanced straight to the grand final with a thrilling second semi-final win over Claremont before the Tigers advanced to the decider with a one-point nail-biting victory over South Fremantle in the preliminary final. Swan Districts led all day in the grand final, though, kicking four goals into the breeze in the opening quarter and then dominating the last term with the advantage of the wind and in the driving rain to end up winning 11.9 (75) to 7.13 (55). WAFL Grand Final Preview – East Perth v Subiaco

Saturday, September 20, 2014 - 2:49 PM - by Chris Pike
EAST Perth and Subiaco have shared a home ground for more than a decade now but will face off in a grand final for the first time since 1959 with the Royals and Lions set for a strong battle between the two standout teams of 2014. Either side retains the right to make a late change and that remains a possibility especially with the storms predicted for Sunday so it wouldn’t be a huge surprise, but right now East Perth will go into the grand final with the same 22 that won the second semi-final against Subiaco by 32 points. Subiaco meanwhile had three key players missing from its side that beat East Fremantle in last Sunday's preliminary final and captain Kyal Horsley, full-forward Matt Boland and half-forward George Hampson have all been named to come in for the grand final. WAFL Colts Grand Final Preview – Swan Districts v Claremont

Saturday, September 20, 2014 - 8:14 AM - by Chris Pike
SWAN Districts and Claremont meet in Sunday morning's WAFL colts grand final with plenty of exciting young talent on display between two teams who played off in a second semi-final decided with the last kick of the day. Swan Districts was the standout colts team of 2014 winning 18 of 20 matches during the home and away season, and then beating Claremont in the second semi-final to win straight through to the grand final. However, Claremont and South Fremantle have shared the last three WAFL premierships and had played off in last year's grand final, and always loomed as the threats to Swans in 2014 and it was the Tigers who won last week's preliminary final to advance to the grand final. Rumble shoots for historic fifth flag with Subiaco

Friday, September 19, 2014 - 9:45 PM - by Chris Pike
DARREN Rumble has the chance to become Subiaco's most successful ever player with a fifth premiership on Sunday and he will have a big job to do on East Perth full-forward Josh Smith to help that cause. Rumble shared the 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008 premierships with Alistair Pickett, Luke Newick, Marc Webb, Chad Cossom and Mark Haynes but is the last remaining player with four flags to his credit at the Lions giving him the chance of the rare feat of a fifth flag if they beat the Royals this Sunday. He was in his first full season of league football in 2004 cementing himself as one of the best full backs in the league and now a decade later not only has he played in three more flags, but amassed 210 matches as he prepares for his sixth grand final and 18th final overall. Handley proud of Claremont career as the ultimate Mr Versatile

Thursday, September 18, 2014 - 4:40 PM - by Chris Pike
TRINITY Handley put together one of the more remarkable WAFL careers over the past decade as the ultimate versatile player and the 30-year-old retires content having won two premierships, represented WA and being a life member of the Claremont Football Club. Handley played the final game of his career that began at league level in 2004 in Claremont's Round 23 victory over East Perth in which he kicked three goals including the match-winner on a day when Luke Blackwell, Matt Orzel and Andrew Foster also bid farewell to the WAFL. Cadwallader crucial to East Perth's premiership chances

Thursday, September 18, 2014 - 1:19 PM - by Chris Pike
MUCH of the talk surrounding East Perth this season has been about its partnership with the West Coast Eagles, but it is the Royals' WAFL players who will likely be the deciding factor in winning a premiership on Sunday or not with Dean Cadwallader as important as anyone. Cadwallader has now played 40 matches with East Perth since making his debut in 2010, but his last three against Peel Thunder, Claremont and then the second semi-final against Subiaco could very well have been his best in just about best on ground performances in a new role across half-back. East Perth is coming off losing last year's WAFL grand final to West Perth by 49 points but the Royals have been on top of the ladder through most of 2014 ending the year as minor premiers and then booking a grand final sport with a 32-point second semi-final win over Subiaco at Medibank Stadium. Twomey excited to be in another grand final in first year at Subiaco

Thursday, September 18, 2014 - 12:32 PM - by Chris Pike
WAYDE Twomey came to Subiaco from Swan Districts in 2014 confident the Lions could be a force and now he is preparing for his third WAFL grand final appearance and couldn’t be more excited about it. The 28-year-old starred in Swan Districts' successful teams between 2008 and 2010 when he first arrived from VFL club with Werribee and in that time Swans lost the 2008 grand final to Subiaco and the 2009 preliminary final to the Lions so seeing Subiaco involved in September is nothing new. Twomey was then part of Swan Districts' stunning one-point grand final win over Claremont in 2010 before he earned a chance in the AFL with Carlton in 2011 and then returned to Swan Districts in 2012 where he was again part of two more finals campaigns while also winning the 2013 Simpson Medal for his five-goal haul in the State game win over Victoria. Black's hard work brings Sandover Medal, now he hopes for AFL

Tuesday, September 16, 2014 - 5:49 PM - by Chris Pike
AARON Black has worked tirelessly to improve constantly throughout his 85-game WAFL career with West Perth and the 21-year-old was rewarded with the 2014 Sandover Medal on Monday night but even he was surprised at the result. Black won the Sandover Medal for 2014 on Monday night polling 47 votes to win by one vote ahead of teammate Shane Nelson and former winner and pre-count favourite Luke Blackwell with Subiaco captain Kyal Horsley finishing on 45 votes and East Fremantle's Bradd Dalziell 43. It was a thrilling vote count but in the end Black won after polling in the final eight games of the season and held on to win with Blackwell not polling a vote in Claremont's Round 23 victory over East Perth where most pundits had him close to best on ground, if not the best afield that day.
