Subiaco provide blueprint on building premiership team

Wednesday, October 1, 2014 - 7:12 PM - by Chris Pike
SUBIACO'S golden era of four premierships and six grand finals in a seven-year stretch was never going to last forever, but the Lions have quickly rebuilt successfully to win the 2014 flag and lay the blueprint for the rest of the WAFL to follow. Subiaco hadn’t won a premiership since 1988 despite some close calls throughout the 1990s and again in 2003, but what was to ensue was the club's greatest ever period in history. There was the losing grand final of 2003 to West Perth followed by the 2004 premiership and then a disappointing preliminary final exit in 2005 following another strong season. Read More ...

Subiaco's three midfielders deliver premiership glory

Thursday, September 25, 2014 - 5:20 PM - by Chris Pike
SUBIACO relied almost exclusively on three main midfielders throughout the 2014 season and that faith in Jason Bristow, Chris Phelan and Kyal Horsley was rewarded in Sunday's grand final win over East Perth with the trio far and away the three best players on the ground. Second-year coach Jarrad Schofield relied on Bristow, Phelan and Horsley for the bulk of the work in the midfield right throughout the season while opposition teams regularly rotated between six and 10 players through their on-ball division. While the Subiaco trio did get some chop outs, they were relied on to get the job done and were big reasons why the Lions ended up finishing in second position on the ladder, and then making the grand final. East Perth grand final player ratings

Thursday, September 25, 2014 - 3:40 AM - by Chris Pike
EAST Perth lost its second grand final in 12 months on Sunday against Subiaco at Patersons Stadium with the Royals unable to get close enough to having 22 strong contributors like the Lions had on the occasion. 1. Dean Cadwallader – 7 He had a poor grand final last year in East Perth's loss to West Perth and then had an off-season hernia operation that delayed his start to 2014, but once he got his chance he grabbed it and also performed well in the grand final despite the loss to Subiaco. Didn’t get his chance until Round 16 this year, but once he did he was just about best on ground in his three matches leading into the grand final including the second semi-final win over Subiaco. Continuing his new role as a running half-back, he finished the grand final with 19 possessions, eight marks, eight inside-50 entries, five rebounds from defensive 50, four tackles and a terrific long goal in the last quarter that gave the Royals a slight sniff.  Read More ...

Subiaco grand final player ratings

Thursday, September 25, 2014 - 12:23 AM - by Chris Pike
SUBIACO pulled off a stunning WAFL grand final victory over East Perth on Sunday at Patersons Stadium to claim the 2014 premiership with veterans, youngsters and recruits all pivotal to the triumph of the Lions. 1. Jason Bristow – 9.5 The 30-year-old had been a tremendous servant for Subiaco since arriving in 2008 from Melbourne but he was simply outstanding in the grand final victory as the best player on the ground and deservedly winning the Simpson Medal. After missing the 2008 premiership and then playing in the losing grand finals of 2009 and 2011, the flag is a just reward for the service provided over 114 matches. He had already proved himself able to deliver in a grand final as Subiaco's best player in the 2011 loss to Claremont, but this time he led his team to a flag with his physical approach perfectly suited to the wet conditions. He finished with 27 possessions, seven clearances, five tackles, four inside-50 entries and a crucial goal just before three quarter-time. Read More ...
