Black's hard work brings Sandover Medal, now he hopes for AFL

Tuesday, September 16, 2014 - 5:49 PM - by Chris Pike
AARON Black has worked tirelessly to improve constantly throughout his 85-game WAFL career with West Perth and the 21-year-old was rewarded with the 2014 Sandover Medal on Monday night but even he was surprised at the result. Black won the Sandover Medal for 2014 on Monday night polling 47 votes to win by one vote ahead of teammate Shane Nelson and former winner and pre-count favourite Luke Blackwell with Subiaco captain Kyal Horsley finishing on 45 votes and East Fremantle's Bradd Dalziell 43. It was a thrilling vote count but in the end Black won after polling in the final eight games of the season and held on to win with Blackwell not polling a vote in Claremont's Round 23 victory over East Perth where most pundits had him close to best on ground, if not the best afield that day. West Perth's Aaron Black wins 2014 Sandover Medal

Monday, September 15, 2014 - 10:41 PM - by Chris Pike
WEST Perth has its first Sandover Medal winner since 1993 with 21-year-old star Aaron Black winning a thrilling vote count on Monday night with only four votes splitting the top five players. Black might not turn 22 until Christmas Day this year but has already played 85 league matches and now can add a Sandover Medal to the 2013 premiership and a State game appearance for Western Australia in 2013. It was a thrilling Sandover Medal vote count on Monday night at the Grand Ball Room at Crown Perth with Black finishing on 47 votes, but only taking the lead thanks to three votes in the final round while pre-count favourite Luke Blackwell didn’t poll and was left on 46 votes. Sandover Medal Preview

Monday, September 15, 2014 - 5:12 PM - by Chris Pike
THE Sandover Medal for 2014 looks to have a host of potential winners with two players in the running to win the WAFL's most prestigious honour for a second time while a band of midfielders fresh off AFL lists sure to be among the top vote getters as well. The 2011 Sandover Medal winner Luke Blackwell and last year's winner Rory O'Brien appear to be two players in the running to take out the award as the WAFL's fairest and best player for the second time, but there isn't a shortage of players that they will be contending with on the night. The Sandover Medal count for 2014 will be held this Monday night in the Grand Ball Room at Crown Perth with the event broadcast live on radio via 91.3 SportFM from 6.30pm while it will be live streamed at www.thewest.com.au from 8.30pm. WAFL Preliminary Final Results

Monday, September 15, 2014 - 7:42 AM - by Chris Pike
SUBIACO has appeared to be East Perth's great challenger for the 2014 season and now that will eventuate in the two meeting in next Sunday's WAFL grand final after the Lions beat an inaccurate East Fremantle by five points in Sunday's preliminary final. The Lions and Sharks took to Medibank Stadium with a spot in the grand final at Patersons Stadium against East Perth at stake, and it was Subiaco who prevailed in the finish winning 10.13 (73) to 7.26 (68). It was a devastating loss for an East Fremantle team who was celebrating milestones for Rob Young (150 games), Mark McGough (100) and Brett Peake (100) and trying to at least make a grand final in the last year of the career of Steven Dodd. Successful Dawson focuses on winning flag for his Royals players

Saturday, September 13, 2014 - 1:43 PM - by Chris Pike
BRIAN Dawson will now coach in his fourth grand final in five years as a senior WAFL coach but in his typical style he is only focusing on trying to do whatever he can to help his East Perth players win a first premiership since 2002. Dawson is now one game away from completing his fifth season as a league coach and that has seen him make the 2008 and 2010 grand finals with Swan Districts, and now the 2013 and 2014 grand finals with East Perth in a remarkable run at the helm of both clubs. Dawson led Swan Districts to a stunning 2010 premiership victory against Claremont but that was built on the back of a learning experience with a young team that lost the 2008 grand final to Subiaco and then suffered a disappointing exit in the 2009 preliminary final. Young proud to reach 150 but premiership with Sharks the aim

Saturday, September 13, 2014 - 12:54 PM - by Chris Pike
BECOMING a life member of the East Fremantle Football Club is something that means a lot to big man Rob Young as he reaches 150 games in Sunday's preliminary final but that pales into insignificance when he considers what winning a premiership with the Sharks would mean. Young arrived at East Fremantle in 2007 from VFL club Coburg initially because he thought being able to display his running power and mobility for his 197cm, 103kg frame in the WAFL would help him earn a crack at the AFL. Malaxos hopes Sharks keep winning on back of strong leaders

Friday, September 12, 2014 - 11:29 AM - by Chris Pike
EAST Fremantle coach Steve Malaxos credits the belief and determination of his leadership group for a stunning first semi-final comeback against Swan Districts and now he hopes they can earn another crack at a grand final in 2014. Even though East Fremantle was finishing with a strong breeze at home last Sunday against Swan Districts, it did appear a bridge too far to make up a 30-point deficit to keep their season alive. However, the Sharks delivered a remarkable nine-goal to nil final quarter to end up winning by 23 points and book a place in this Sunday's preliminary final against Subiaco at Leederville's Medibank Stadium. Schofield confident Lions can bounce back to reach grand final

Friday, September 12, 2014 - 10:21 AM - by Chris Pike
SUBIACO coach Jarrad Schofield remains confident his team will bounce back from last Sunday's second semi-final loss to East Perth and get over East Fremantle in this Sunday's preliminary final to earn another crack at the Royals in the grand final. Subiaco was the only team to not taste defeat at the hands of East Perth during the 2014 home and away season on the way to finishing in second position on the ladder, but the Lions came up short to the tune of 32 points in last Sunday's second semi-final clash at Medibank Stadium. The Lions now have another chance to reach the grand final of 2014 by hosting the Sharks this Sunday again at Medibank Stadium and Schofield remains confident his team will bounce back well from the loss to East Perth. Retired Handley confident Claremont will be a force in 2015

Thursday, September 11, 2014 - 11:21 AM - by Chris Pike
TWO-time Claremont premiership star Trinity Handley is still adjusting to the fact that he has played the last game of his outstanding WAFL career but has no doubt that the giant strides made by the Tigers in the second half of 2014 will hold the club in good stead. Handley played the last game of his 189-match career alongside the also retiring Luke Blackwell, Andrew Foster and Matt Orzel in Claremont's stirring final round victory over East Perth at Medibank Stadium. That brings to an end a career that saw Handley take part in five grand finals for two premierships and 17 finals matches overall including an appearance for WA since making his debut in 2004 and he was part of a consistently strong Claremont team that made finals in seven of his 10 seasons.
