IT is not often that a multiple premiership winner can further enhance his reputation in a losing Grand Final but that is exactly the case with Subiaco captain Kyal Horsley after a heroic performance in Sunday's loss to Peel Thunder. Sunday's Grand Final didn’t go to plan for Subiaco with Peel creating history by winning its first ever WAFL premiership leading from start to finish to win by 23 points, but it wasn’t without a remarkable individual performance by Horsley. GERALD Ugle was a little unsure of being Peel Thunder captain at the start of the season but now he will go down in history as the club's first ever premiership skipper and he couldn't be more proud. Ugle joined Peel for the 2015 WAFL season and had a terrific campaign kicking 38 goals to help the Thunder to a historic first ever finals appearance. West Australian Football Commission nominee Janet Seth was announced winner of the Honorary Category of the 2016 Football Woman of the Year Awards on Thursday September 29. Three West Australian women were selected as category finalists for the Awards for their outstanding contribution to Australian Football. Seth won the Honorary Category for her tireless work as a team manager across youth and senior women’s football, as well as maintaining her role as a member of the WA Women’s Football League Board, WA Football Commission Female Advisory Committee and the recently formed Fremantle Football Club National Women’s League Bid Advisory Committee. CAM Shepherd had to bide his time for his first crack at being a WAFL senior coach but after some growing pains he couldn’t have been more proud of how the Peel Thunder and Fremantle players alike came together to win the 2016 premiership. Shepherd had been a long successful assistant coach taking up roles at several clubs including Subiaco, East Perth and Swan Districts with the respect he was held in among WA football ranks highlighted with him being chairman of selection for the West Australia state team on several occasions. PEEL Thunder has made history winning a maiden premiership in the club's first ever WAFL Grand Final appearance beating the premiers of the past two years Subiaco by 23 points at Domain Stadium. The Thunder first played WAFL finals last year losing to West Perth and East Perth before qualifying again in 2016 from fourth position and going on to beat East Perth by 49 points, West Perth by 60 points and South Fremantle by 39 to qualify for a first Grand Final. Subiaco has won the last two WAFL premierships and finished on top of the ladder this year before beating South Fremantle by 40 points in the second semi-final. But Peel got on top early with the last four goals of the first quarter and managed to lead by 29 points midway through the second term. CLAREMONT kicked four consecutive final quarter goals to set up an 18-point reserves Grand Final win over East Perth to see the Tigers claim the 2016 premiership. With Claremont's colts earlier beating East Perth for a second straight premiership as well, the Tigers reserves backed up that performance for their first reserves premiership since 2012. East Perth's reserves finished on top of the ladder and did lead by as much as 24 points during the second quarter, but the Royals have now still not won a reserves premiership since 1983. EAST Perth made a stirring run into the RediMed Colts Grand Final and threw down the gauntlet to Claremont but the Tigers proved too strong with a run of seven consecutive goals either side of three quarter-time to win by 18 points. The Royals had to beat East Fremantle in the final round just to qualify for the finals in the first place and they went on to beat East Fremantle, South Fremantle and Perth to make their way into the Grand Final. But Claremont had beaten South Fremantle and Perth to make it to the Grand Final before a week off and then despite trailing by 18 points early in the quarter, the Tigers finished strongly with the next seven goals to end up beating the Royals 11.13 (79) to 9.7 (61). NO WAFL club has ever won two premiership hat-tricks as close together as Subiaco could by winning Sunday's Grand Final and coach Jarrad Schofield would have been involved in all six, but his focus is on wanting to see his players receive reward for all the hard work they put in. Subiaco won three straight WAFL premierships in 2006, 2007 and 2008 with Schofield a key player in each of those triumphs on return to the Lions after an AFL career with West Coast, Port Adelaide and Fremantle that included the 2004 premiership with the Power. He retired at the end of 2008 and now has been coach of Subiaco in the premierships of 2014 and 2015, and is at the helm again heading into this Sunday's WAFL Grand Final against Peel Thunder at Domain Stadium. SUBIACO midfielder Leigh Kitchin has the chance to become a dual WAFL premiership player in just his 43rd game with the Lions in Sunday's Grand Final as he continues to thrive in his move west. Following the 2014 Grand Final victory over East Perth, Subiaco had to do some quick work to replace Simpson Medallist Jason Bristow in the midfield and they could not have possibly found a more like for like replacement than Kitchin.
