Robinson excited for chance at second flag five years in the making

Sunday, September 20, 2015 - 11:00 AM - by Chris Pike
BRETT Robinson was part of the most remarkable WAFL premiership in recent history at Swan Districts back in 2010 but given the tough times he's had since, winning his second flag next Sunday for Subiaco will mean every bit as much for the damaging and hard-running midfielder. Robinson joined the WAFL having originally come from Tasmania and then Werribee in the VFL in 2008, and alongside Wayde Twomey and Tim Geappen helped form a strong Swan Districts team that made the grand final the first year, just missed in 2009 and then won a premiership in 2010. Just to play in that flag, Robinson had to overcome a knee reconstruction earlier in 2010 and then illness curtailed his impact in 2011 and his 2012 was ruined by a second knee reconstruction. Black declares 'no chance' he will miss preliminary final

Saturday, September 19, 2015 - 10:45 PM - by Chris Pike
REIGNING Sandover Medallist Aaron Black has declared himself a certain starter for West Perth's WAFL preliminary final against East Perth on Sunday with the Falcons turning their attention to a better performance starting in the middle after their second semi-final loss to Subiaco. Black was one of three West Perth players to come out of last Sunday's loss to Subiaco at Medibank Stadium with an injury complaint joining full-forward Michael Lourey (ankle) and ruckman Chris Keunen (knee). However, the Sandover Medallist, premiership star and 107-game midfielder has done everything he can this week to get himself up to play in Sunday's preliminary final against the Royals with a spot in the grand final against Subiaco up for grabs. Howlett hopes to help Royals veterans get another chance

Saturday, September 19, 2015 - 10:14 PM - by Chris Pike
EAST Perth is now in its best form of the 2015 WAFL season entering Sunday's preliminary final against West Perth at HBF Arena with Mitch Howlett making the most of his first chance to play finals football after being overlooked the last two years. East Perth has now won seven of its last eight games to regroup after a lacklustre first half of the 2015 season to have firstly qualified for the finals for a fourth straight year, and having beaten Claremont and Peel Thunder in cut-throat finals to be a chance of a third straight grand final. While Craig Wulff, Brendan Lee, Steven Payne, Kyle Anderson, Paul Johnson, Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls and Mitch Fraser have played in both losing grand finals to West Perth and Subiaco the last two years, it's a new experience for 22-year-old Howlett. Royals well placed for third straight crack at grand final

Friday, September 18, 2015 - 6:14 PM - by Chris Pike
EAST Perth coach Brian Dawson couldn’t fault his team's preparation and form entering Sunday's WAFL preliminary final against West Perth at HBF Arena as the Royals chase a third straight grand final appearance, but he knows it counts for nought once the ball is bounced. Coming off playing in the last two grand finals, and subsequently losing to West Perth in 2013 and Subiaco in 2014, East Perth was left with plenty of work to do just to make the finals again in 2015 having won just three of their first eight, and six of 14 games. However, the Royals then turned things around and had a terrific finish to the home and away season winning five of the last six matches, and then overcame Claremont in the elimination final and Peel Thunder in last Sunday's first semi-final. Surprise return a possibility as Falcons try to freshen up

Friday, September 18, 2015 - 1:37 PM - by Chris Pike
JORDAN Jones is in contention to be a surprise inclusion for West Perth in Sunday's WAFL preliminary final against East Perth at HBF Arena as the Falcons try to inject some fresh legs for what will be their 11th consecutive match since their last bye. West Perth's last bye was way back in Round 15 with the Falcons playing the last eight games of the home and away season without another break, but they were able to secure second position on the ladder having won 13 of 20 games. West Perth then proved too good for a weakened Peel Thunder side winning by 109 points in the qualifying final at HBF Arena, but it was a tired looking outfit in the second half of last week's second semi-final against Subiaco with the Lions kicking 13 of the last 16 goals to win by 55 points.
