WAFC Congratulates WAFL Draftees

THE West Australian Football Commission (WAFC) congratulates the 10 WAFL players selected in the 2016 NAB AFL National Draft in Sydney tonight, including two top 10 selections and four in the first round. First round selections included pick #6 Sam Petrevski-Seton (Claremont), #8 Griffin Logue (Swan Districts), #18 Sam Powell-Pepper (East Perth) and #19 Tim English (South Fremantle).  WAFC CEO Gavin Taylor congratulated all the players selected and paid tribute to everyone involved in their development. “This is a fantastic achievement not only for the players selected tonight, but for everyone who has been part of their football journey. WA Football developing strong coaching philosophy

Dockers take to Broome for Community Clinics

2016 WAFC Life Members announced

THE West Australian Football Commission has announced that WAFC Life Memberships will be awarded to long-serving community football identities Jock Beattie and John Davies. Both will be formally inducted at the annual WAFC Life Members’ Association end-of-year function to be held on Monday, December 5 at Domain Stadium. Induction to the WAFC Life Members’ Association is regarded as the WAFC’s highest level of recognition, distinct from life membership awarded by individual football clubs and associated bodies, and is awarded to individuals who have made an outstanding overall contribution to football in Western Australia. WA Football participation at record levels

FOOTBALL participation in Western Australia has reached a record 302,662 following the official release of 2016 AFL Census figures today. The total number includes a 27% increase on WA’s 2015 participation total, plus an additional 15,570 captured for the first time in the AFL Census under one-off club-based programs such as the Nicky Winmar Cup, Kirby Bentley Cup and remote and regional carnivals. The overall growth has been driven by strong club participation, continued growth of female football, quality Inter School competitions and a rise in the number of Introductory School Programs. WA football participation was the highest for any State outside Victoria and made up 20.4% of Australia’s overall total of 1,404,176, which increased nationally by 12.5%. The number of players that joined football clubs in WA increased by 7.7% to more than 67,000 which included 5.9% growth in Youth Football and a 61.3% increase in the number of females playing club football. Female Talent Academy set to grow by leaps and bounds

WACA Ground preferred option for future home of WAFC

The Western Australian Football Commission (WAFC) has confirmed that a redeveloped West Australian Cricket Association (WACA) Ground is the preferred option for the future home of the WAFC. The co-location proposal with the WACA remains subject to the WAFC finalising its negotiations with the State Government in regards to football’s future funding model, as well as agreeing to final terms with the WACA. The results of elections for Commissioners of the West Australian Football Commission were endorsed tonight, Wednesday November 16, by the Nominee Members of the WAFC (WA’s AFL and WAFL Clubs) at a meeting of WA Football stakeholders. Current WAFC Commissioners Hon. Cheryl Edwardes AM and Mr. Neil Randall were each reappointed for terms of three years. As the anticipation builds towards the 2016 AFL National Draft on November 25 and young WAFL players eagerly wait for their name to be called out, we’ve taken a look back at some of the greatest AFL National Draft bargains to come out of the WAFL competition since 1986. From Norm Smith Medallist Andrew Embley to Hawks’ triple-premiership player Ben Stratton, some of the AFL’s great champions have been selected late in the National Draft, proving top talent can run deeper than the first couple of rounds.
