Shepherd a proud coach but wants one more big effort from Thunder

Thursday, September 22, 2016 - 9:00 AM - by Chris Pike
PEEL Thunder coach Cam Shepherd is proud of the work that has gone into Peel Thunder making history by qualifying for a first WAFL Grand Final this Sunday against Subiaco, and he can't wait to see if his in-form team can produce one more outstanding effort. When Shepherd took over as coach of Peel ahead of the 2013 season, the club had never played in a WAFL final and had never come close to doing so. Having had to bide his time and deal with disappointments missing out on other senior coaching roles, the 1987 Claremont premiership player is now in his fourth year in charge of Peel and will forever be known as the first coach to lead the Thunder to a Grand Final. Sandover Medallist Bolton excited for 2017 whether at Claremont or AFL

Wednesday, September 21, 2016 - 10:52 PM - by Chris Pike
A SANDOVER and Simpson Medal winning season could very well see Jye Bolton earn an AFL chance but if it doesn't he will be more than happy to remain at Claremont in 2017 under new coach Darren Harris. Bolton arrived at Claremont at the start of 2016 having finished his 2015 season in the VFL sidelined with a foot injury that hadn't allowed him to do any pre-season training as yet. Given the end result was a remarkable season that saw him average 29.1 possessions a game on his way to claiming the Sandover Medal for 2016 on Monday night on the back of earlier winning the state game Simpson Medal, it's a scary thought he did it all on the back of a limited preparation. Claremont's Jye Bolton wins 2016 Sandover Medal

Monday, September 19, 2016 - 10:24 PM - by Chris Pike
CLAREMONT'S Jye Bolton has capped a remarkable first WAFL season with the Tigers on-baller adding the Sandover Medal to his Simpson Medal in a vote count that featured all the expected favourites on Monday night. The Sandover Medal count for 2016 was held at Perth Convention Exhibition Centre and while Peel Thunder's Matt de Boer, Perth's Clint Jones, East Fremantle's Liam Anthony, West Perth's Shane Nelson and Subiaco's Chris Phelan all went close, it was Bolton who took out the award. It was a thrilling vote count with Ashton Hams racing out to an early lead with 25 votes after 10 rounds despite being ineligible. He was runner-up to Perth's Aidan Tropiano last year but he didn’t add to his 25 votes the rest of the count. Read More ...

PROLIFIC ball winners Clint Jones and Jye Bolton might appear warm favourites heading into the 2016 Sandover Medal count but that doesn't mean players from Subiaco, Peel Thunder and West Perth in particular don't have a real chance. West Australian football's most prestigious individual award will be presented at Perth Convention Exhibition Centre this Monday night with a live broadcast of the count live on 91.3 SportFM. While Perth's Jones and Claremont's Bolton had remarkable seasons leading their teams in the midfield during 2016 to head into the count as deserved favourites, by no means are one of them guaranteed of winning. Thunder captain Ugle wants to keep making history

Saturday, September 17, 2016 - 9:32 AM - by Chris Pike
GERALD Ugle has already made history in his first season as captain at Peel Thunder ahead of Sunday's preliminary final and as much as the Fremantle-listed players are receiving attention, he couldn’t be more proud of their locals. Ugle made the decision to join Peel in 2015 after one season back in the WAFL with his original club Perth after time in the AFL with the GWS Giants. Almost two full years later it's a move that could hardly have worked out better. After an outstanding individual season in 2015 that saw Peel make finals for the first time ever before losing the qualifying final to West Perth and first semi-final to East Perth, Ugle was named captain for 2016 despite only turning 23 during the year. Pullman one of just three Bulldogs looking for another Grand Final crack

Friday, September 16, 2016 - 5:28 PM - by Chris Pike
JOSH Pullman is a rare breed of Bulldog in 2016 who has already experienced a WAFL Grand Final and the forward turned defender is hoping to get another crack at that elusive premiership by helping South Fremantle to a win in Sunday's preliminary final against Peel Thunder. Pullman is just one of three South Fremantle players who will play in Sunday's preliminary final against Peel Thunder at Fremantle Community Bank Oval who has previously experienced a WAFL Grand Final before. That was back in 2008 when Pullman graduated from being a colts premiership captain at Swan Districts to cementing a spot at centre half-forward in the league side at Swans who made it all the way to the Grand Final before losing to Subiaco.
